Back when I was hot to finish the development of my artificial kidney, a group of patients at Kings County Hospital got together and started one of the very first advocacy groups for folks with a disease. The National Association of Patients on Hemodialysis. From those 6 patients in 1969, who were undergoing dialysis thrice weekly for 12 to 18 hours at a clip (digest that fact for a minute), they involved other patients looking to brainstorm and seek out better alternatives- and changed their name to the American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP).

Still Waiting…
Did you ever wonder how the biohacked device works? You know, the one I discussed yesterday.
I’ll do it myself!
So, it’s been more than a few years since I reported how parents were hacking into their children’s glucose monitor to create what some would love to call an artificial pancreas. But, I can guarantee you the combining a pump, glucose monitor, smartphone, and a Bluetooth computer may keep our kids safe- but an artificial pancreas, it ain’t.
Not just wine is growing in Napa
When I travel, I add a local paper to my daily reading. Yes, that does mean I read 5 newspapers on those days. (OK. Since the NY Times is one of my daily reads, I don’t generally pick up another local paper when in the New York metropolitan region.)
Dialysis Bonuses?
Sometimes you just have to share bad information. Like a few weeks ago, when I reported that data indicated the nature of the microbiome population in a mom’s gut is associated with the development of autism spectrum disorders in their children. (My goal in publicizing this data was to alert parents-to-be of the issue- and to consider fecal transplantation if that issue could be applied to them.)
Just say no?
When I was growing up, I went to yeshiva. As one of the two “townies” going to the school (the other was my brother), we shared a bus with kids going to Sacred Heart. 38 of them.
From here to there
I know you’ve grown tired of me reminding you that you need to log your business mileage to get the benefit of deducting the costs of your car. Unless your car use is like mine, this really is a necessity.
What a special day. No zero’s here yet.
Listen… Do you want to know a secret?
No, I am not channeling one of my favorites songs from the Beatles. Today is the birthday of my eldest. Of course, we use the time a baby breathes its first, but Shoshana took way more than a day from the time her mother’s water broke to enter into the world.
I didn’t write this!
So, I was reading a few newspapers (that’s nothing new, I read about 5 a day)- and over the course of a day or two, the same article appeared in a few of them. I tried looking up the person who provided the advice, and was stymied in my quest to reach her. Nevertheless, her advice to kids about to enter college needs to be repeated far and wide. I’m guessing you didn’t read it- or didn’t get one of the papers where it was published, so I’m sharing her words of wisdom here.
Universal Child Care
A few weeks ago, I wrote about the child care crisis in America. Working parents have difficult times finding quality day care- at reasonable prices- for their kids. It is not atypical that the costs for child care swallows up the net pay (after taxes) of the lower paid spouse.
