Whether we truly believe that our sukot (the plural of suka) are to remind us that we traveled for 40 years in the desert- or we needed to preempt the pagan harvest festival that occurred this time of year three millennia ago-  is truly immaterial.  Because we have found meaning in the suka- to remind us that our lives are transient, our lives are fragile, and our lives require our efforts along with Hashem’s help.

Construction Zone

Yes, it’s another holiday.  Among my favorites.   For the past two days, I’ve been cleaning my backyard, moving all the furniture around, and building a hut.   Because Sunday night starts Sukot- the full moon holiday of Tishrei.  (By the way- there will be an eclipse that accompanies this moon, as is often the case with this holiday!)

Kidney Clone Ahead!!!!!!

Ah, yes, you knew this would happen.  At least if you truly thought about it.

Japanese scientists have cloned stem cells to produce viable kidneys.  Ok, in rats.  But still!  This is the sort of research that our country feels is in contravention to some religious morality.   (Why not just let those folks NOT perform the research themselves. We have many others who want to help our sick citizens!)

Guess what.  It may be time to throw out all our anatomy and physiology textbooks.  You know, the ones we used in Med school, the ones I used to teach the next generation of health professionals at schools across this great nation.   Because there’s been a new discovery- one that will affect how we think about the brain for a long time in the future.
