This is a continuation of yesterday's blog- I'm thanking my mentors.
I’ve written about my next mentor often. (Here’s but one example– with another great story about Cary.) He was but one half of the management team that took a chance to hire me. A soon-to-be 14 y old kid. And, let me basically take over their baby. (As you can see, Cary became a mentor about the time I was losing touch with Ms. Katzman. I’d been really lucky to have a continuous mentor relationship for nigh 16 years, by the time this one ends.)
I don’t generally celebrate (American) Thanksgiving. My Thanksgiving is more in line of how and when the Pilgrims created the holiday. That was a version of Sukot, the harvest festival. More akin to Canadian Thanksgiving, which coincides with my holiday. (Think about it. What harvest would you reap in late November?)
Agreement- at least in modern day America- comes slowly, if at all.
Of course, when one party takes it upon itself to harm citizens of states that vote for their counterpart, it becomes even more evident why such problems exist.
I had mentioned earlier (when discussing the election of Joe Biden to the presidency) that Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks (A”H) succumbed to cancer a few weeks ago. And, Rav Sacks was a towering figure- not just in Judaism, but to folks around the world. (Here’s a link to the Erasmus Lecture he provided the First Things organization.) Until his death, he had a slot on BBC radio, was a commentator on British TV, and wrote a column for the Times of London. Besides serving as the Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom, until he retired in 2013 (after 22 years), during which tenure he was knighted. Then he taught at Yeshiva University and New York University.
So, today is somewhat of a special day. But, before you will understand why it’s special, I need to give you a little background.
Remember when we considered what the elite school, the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, was planning to do? (You do recall this is often considered the #1 high school in the US- and that it fails to attract significant numbers of Black and Hispanic students. Which is exactly why changes to the admission system are being proposed.)
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
That’s exactly how I felt a few Saturdays ago.
The bicentennial.
OK, so most of you weren’t around then.
But, we- America- put on a hell of a party back in 1976. Took over the entire National Mall in DC to celebrate. And, we probably were pretty united since we had just escaped the vitriol, chicanery, and criminality of Tricky Dick (Richard Milhous Nixon). Having our first non-elected President. Oh, sure, you will tell me that we’ve had lots of Vice-Presidents take over when the President has died- or been murdered.
