About half my efforts are spent working with lawyers, physicians, and other professionals. They are among my client base since they rely upon the proprietary software and business smarts that they obtain from us to run their businesses. But (unfortunately?), not all of these type of folks employ our services. And, I’m amazed at what I see when I examine new clients’ business systems.
If it is your business to provide services to others, you darn well better understand that you aren’t really doing so, unless you have paying clients. What you are doing is not even a hobby- it’s just a waste of time.
It’s New Year’s Eve. I know, you are rushing around, trying to get everything done so you can go out and party tonight. But, here’s something else you shouldn’t forget. Make your plan for 2015. You deserve it. No… you need it!
I was reading about a “new” program being started at Lehigh University and Delaware. This program lets students pursue their own projects with no set curriculum for some of their education. Lehigh is calling their program “Mountaintop”, where the students request equipment and advice- but get to choose the concept they wish to devote a term or two to achieve. The underlying premise is that research, work experience, and independent long-term projects tend to foster innovation, collaboration, persistence- and amplify the knowledge the students have acquired in previous classes.
There’s an old joke about which professions make the worst business managers and leaders. I won’t bother to say which one it is, though… But, if you are a professional (lawyer, doctor, accountant), then you know that joke (fact). And, you know you need to make your business stronger and more profitable.
