Anti-Otherism 2021 (This should have been eradicated centuries ago)

So, today is “fake” Columbus Day.  Another example of our government manipulating events so we have 3 day weekends.  The real Columbus Day is tomorrow (the 12th).  Or is that  Indigenous People’s Day?

Columbus Day

Whether Columbus was a hidden Jew or not is immaterial to this post.  Yet, it is absolutely clear that his voyages were funded with the money that Isabella and Ferdinand stole from the Jewish people they killed or banished back in 1492.  It’s also clear that a good portion of Columbus’ crew were Jewish folks. escaping Spain with their lives.

The sort of abject anti-Semitism manifested by Isabella and Ferdinand (with their Grand Inquisition) has been the norm in this world forever.  We, as sentient human beings,  can hope it ends.  Just like we can hope the hatred of all “others” ends.  But, that takes work.  And, it takes standing up to those who promote such hatred.

I moved to Virginia 46 years ago. To be routinely greeted with overt anti-Semitism (as well as racial animosity). And, while those prejudices seemed to attenuate over the years, this racial and religious hatred has been inflamed- nationally and  internationally-  of late.

I have friends who swear they never see this hatred. But, that is because they elect to not see it.  They have become so  inured to the buzzwords used (even as it piques their own attitudes), that they don’t realize they are actually promoting and/or participating in some of these horrendous events. (Yes, this fact has often been demonstrated to them. But, given the lifetime of indoctrination they have endured, it takes repeated “there it is” moments to make them more cognizant.)

To some degree that is exactly from where the “anti-immigrant” attitudes emanate. The concept that these others are “stealing places in line”, that affirmative action lets (the undeserving others) “cut in line” are what drives this hatred. (Dr. Arlie Hochschild [UC Berkeley] is but one researcher who has documented these facts. )

Many pundits (those talking heads that are simply folks with a journalism degree- perhaps, but expound their views on TV) want us to believe that the Trump voters were responding to economic hardship- but that impetus wasn’t really true economic hardship. It was those folks’ belief that others are benefiting more than them. The American National Election Study found 47% of registered Republicans were positive that discrimination against white folks is a real thing. (Another earlier study conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute, discovered that the same number of registered Republicans felt that discrimination against white folks is at least as prevalent as discrimination against minorities (including Black folks.)

This is the hatred that folks like TheDonald managed to inflame. It is this base that he must “energize” to get him and his party elected and re-elected.

That includes those same folks,  the same ones that marched in Charlottesville claiming “Jews won’t replace us”.  The same who shot folks on Shabat in the Pittsburgh temple.  The same one who killed Asian Women in greater Atlanta.  Do not forget that TheDonald thought they were all “good people”.  (Just like he says those insurrectionists were good patriots, as they mauled police and destroyed the US Capitol.)

Because that’s the way he rolls.

It’s time America wakes up. Before we begin to need to spell it AmeriKKKa. Or, we are covered with Aryan Nation tattoos.  And, find that we are now an autocracy and no longer a democratic republic.

  1. I think your last sentence is a very sad, very possible thing. And then what, if it comes to pass? Who will take in the American refugees? (the ones who aren’t rich, anyway). Several years ago, Amazon Prime showed an alternate history series where the Axis won World War II and took over the United States. The eastern part of our country was taken by the Nazis, and the scariest part was how easily Americans adopted the Nazi ways.
