What happens when there is no one right answer?
That’s exactly what is going on right now – in America and the world.
Well, if we need herd immunity of more than 70% to be safe, we aren’t anywhere close. (Only 50% of us are inoculated.) But, that doesn’t mean those of us who have endured two mRNA vaccines have to be treated as if they’ve done nothing to improve their condition. That is one of the reasons that the CDC has explained that those who have been vaccinated no longer have to wear masks outside- unless there are tons of folks around. The CDC also explained that if we are meeting in small numbers in our own houses and we’ve all been vaccinated, we don’t need to wear masks, either.
But, it’s more than that.
Companies are now evaluating bringing their staff back into the offices. But, given the CDC guidelines, these same companies are considering requiring all returning staff to be vaccinated. But, that also means that those who have religious objections are going to be put at risk. It’s more than that, too- studies show 55% of employees will vaccinate if the company mandates – but 28% may leave rather than comply. So, a great deal of communication and cajoling may be necessary.
Then, of course, in our litigious society, there is the possibility of being sued for demanding all employees be vaccinated. Siri and Glimstad, a New York firm that plays up antivaxxers, has been bring threats of lawsuits to many entities.
And, what about restaurants? Are they going to demand that every visitor prove they’ve been vaccinated? And, since folks are going to be eating and drinking, they won’t be wearing masks. Which means the staff- who probably HAVE been vaccinated- are going to have to wear masks and maintain safe distance.
What about places like Target? CVS? Best Buy? I can see these stores requiring all visitors to be fully masked. To protect their employees- and the other visitors.
Are you going to be willing to visit a movie theater? Where so many folks – who already don’t shut up, continually text during the movie- and are probably NOT vaccinated- will refuse to be masked.
And, my beloved Phillies- they plan to open up the whole stadium to fans soon. Right now, all the seats are socially distanced. But, starting 12 June- when the Yankees come to CBP to play, the city’s health administrator has ruled that the whole stadium can be opened. But- everyone will have to be masked until further notice. (Since we don’t know who is vaccinated- or not- I think this is a very reasonable position.)
(Now, if I were only mobile and able to visit CBP, I’d be thrilled- wearing a mask or not…)
What sort of decisions are you making for your staff, offices, and visitors?
As of next month, at my job, if you show the company proof of vaccination, you will be allowed to take off your mask in all company areas (which are not public access). Right now you have to mask except if you are in your cubicle. I’m still working from home but we are going to be brought back in the near future. I’m vaccinated but am still wearing a mask in all indoor public spaces anywhere I go and am not planning to do any indoor dining at this time.

Sounds like the rational response to me, Alana!
Life will definitely be weird for a little while. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Glad to make folks aware of the limitations of the “normalcy” that currently obtains.
I have been vaccinated but I am not willing to go to the movies yet. If I get on a plane, I will be masked and face-shielded. I am not eating in a restaurant yet either. I still wear masks when doing my business outside. I don’t trust all these suddenly unmasked people…

I agree with your precautions, Dominique!
First things first, you are still under house arrest with your leg?? How much longer until you will be healed so you can go enjoy a baseball game? Rich and I have both had 2 vaccines but we still work our masks. We went out for dinner on Mother’s Day, the first in a sit down restaurant since last March.
There is no time frame for my ability to try walking yet.
Glad you are staying safe, Martha.
You bring up many important points. I recently received my second shot. Yet, I will continue to be cautious. I am not ready to go back to the old normal. Time will tell how everything shakes out.
I’m with you, Marc- wait till you read the post that is coming on Wednesday!
