I’ve written many times about the amount of physical exercise we need to do to ensure our physical and mental well-being. Walking 6 miles a week. Exercising 150 minutes a week- even if you are a weekend warrior.
Now, I swim 4 or 5 times a week and I ride my bike. But, I do lots of other things, too. (Yes, I also sit at a desk for some 4 or 5 hours a day, Monday through Friday.)
But, lots of folks do what we can actually call non-traditional exercises. (Those fit-bit devices can tell you how many steps you made. How much other exercise you really do.) There’s no need to wear special clothes or go to the gym.
Sure, using a step machine for 30 minutes may help us get rid of 223 calories. But, so could sweeping your floors and sidewalks for an hour. If you were mopping your floors, that time would be cut to 45 minutes.
I have included a chart of home activities that can let you determine how many calories are expended for a bunch of normal activities. (The trick is that metabolic equivalents [METS] get converted to calories per minute by multiplying the METS value by 3.5, then by our body weight in kilograms (lbs/2.2), and then dividing that result by 200.)
So, get moving. Because our brain and hearts are depending on it.
Oh- and I still believe we need to get that 150 minutes of exercise in each week. Unless we are vigorously mopping our floors or carrying four bags of groceries up five flights of steps routinely.
Interesting. I’ve been thinking about the exercise my heart needs, but less so, about exercising my brain. I’d like to keep them both in good working order. I used to live near a Bally’s with a walking track and I wish I still did, because that would make walking a mile a day a lot easier (no pollen). Maybe it’s time to get to know the mall again.
Wherever you can get that 150 minutes works, Jeanine!
A reminder that my health style could be improved. I walk but not always enough. Not enough house work, either.
I have cut down a great deal of my housework (and it shows). It’s time to address that issue. Burning more calories couldn’t hurt either.
I guess I should start making our bed every day. 🤣 Being that it’s upstairs, no one see it so I just strip it down, does that count? When you think about time, 150 minutes a week shouldn’t be a problem.
YOu’d be amazed how few of us manage to eke out that 150 minutes of exercise a week, Martha!
This is amazing to know that we can burn the calorie by doing normal household work I am definetly going to try floor waxer to burn more calorie .By the way its a amazing article thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for your visit- and you kind comments.
I am definitely not nearing 150 minutes yet; with my walking and my sometimes dancing and my household chores…but I at least know I can get there.. and always admire that you have been swimming so consistently
You can do it, Vidya. 150 minutes a week- that can be 30 minutes a weekday, 20+ minutes a day, or even two long bike rides on the weekend.
Get moving- we want you around for a long time.
Hello! Someone in my Myspace group shared this website with us so I came to take a look.
I’m definitely loving the information. I’m bookmarking and will
be tweeting this to my followers! Exceptional blog and superb design and style.
Its like you learn my thoughts! You appear to grasp a lot approximately
this, like you wrote the e book in it or something.
I feel that you just can do with some % to power the message house a little bit, but instead of that, that is excellent blog.
An excellent read. I’ll definitely be back. Hi, I do think this is an excellent website.
I stumbledupon it 😉 I am going to return once again since I bookmarked
it. Money and freedom is the best way to change, may you be
rich and continue to guide other people.
