Starting Up?

We began working with smaller companies almost 40 years ago.   But, back then, our efforts were exclusively aimed at developing new products these companies could manufacture, market, and sell.  (We also worked with much larger firms, developing new products, processes and manufacturing schema.)  But, many of our smaller clients ran into problems.  Not with the technical matters, but with their management and financial affairs.   So, we decided to begin working with these firms to help shore up their capabilities in these areas so their great products wouldn’t wither and die because the other parts of the company were sick.

Obviously, if you are just starting out, you need to determine the legal form under which you want to operate.  Should you remain a sole proprietor or partnership?   Or become incorporated/form an LLC?  Each has their own tax situation- some pay corporate taxes (and then you must pay taxes on the money you take out of the company), others pass along profits to you directly, and still others let you allocate profits and losses among partners.  Choosing the right entity is a critical consideration.

Introducing the next gazillionaire…

No Gravatar

If you are like me, you have ideas that you want to share with the world each and every day.  (OK, sometimes each and every hour…But, I digress.)   The concept of starting a new enterprise is terribly exciting- and daunting. One of the primary ways you (and I) can keep it from being overwhelming is to prepare your business plan.  Wait—don’t rush off.  Before you can do even that, you must determine what it is you plan to do- and if you really are prepared to take the enterprise to a certain level.

Shell-shocked

Shell-shocked.   That in a nutshell describes the American citizenry nowadays.  OK, not the 1%-ers, but everyone else.  They may be employed, but they know someone who’s been laid off.  They are working more hours than before- and not being paid for them- because they fear they will be laid off, too.  Their salaries have been stagnant.  Home values- that’s an oxymoron.  The middle class folks may be paying more for their health insurance and for higher deductibles, too, which means even less available income.

A slightly different survey…

And, now cometh a new survey.   One by USBancorp, the fifth largest commercial bank in the US (grown by merger of banks in the West and the Upper Midwest).  One in its third year- and it is an annual survey.  But, their definition of small business is different than that of BankofAmerica, which I discussed on 31 May 2012.  (I told you we did not have uniform definitions!)  USBank (the name under which USBancorp operates) polled 3220 businesses (small?) with $10 million in revenues or less.  (BankofAmerica limited their polling choices to those with half that turnover.  (The survey results are no longer found on the web [2020].)

Small Business Says?

No Gravatar

It was Small Business Week last week.  You know, everyone says how much they value small business in an election year- and does nothing about it.  Depending upon how you define small business (a company that employs- with a payroll- one or more people OR include Mary or Tom working 2 hours a month on the side, with a full time job or mommyhood [or daddyhood] taking up most of the time), most small businesses are not incorporated and pay their taxes as part of an individual’s tax return.   So, tax rates for corporations have no impact on their bottom line.  (Another large segment of “small” business are pass-through entities, which have their profits taxed on an individual’s tax returns, too.)    But, that’s not the subject of this post, either.

Follow the Leader? Only if s/he leads…

The economy is changing.  And, as the economy improves, companies can be in trouble- unless they have been well managed with talented leaders.   Because those employees who feel they’ve been betrayed or let down by the company will leave.  Statistics show that during upturns between 30 and 50% of the talented individuals depart.  And, it also is a function of the employee’s age, gender (1/3 of the men will stay for more money, but less than ¼ the women would do so), tenure, and how many months since their last promotion and/or salary bump.  It also reflects if the employee feels left out of the loop (the manager has too many employees in his/her group), how much travel is involved in the position, the hours worked, the weekends they need to be present, as well.

Ready. Fire. Aim.

I’ve been tempted to join in the fray.  To work with a university and teach entrepreneurial programs.  After all, I’ve been a successful entrepreneur (and an unsuccessful one) for more than 4 decades.  And, I do believe that entrepreneurial efforts are what keeps this country (and the rest of the world) great.   But, I have this nagging problem….

I thought everything was just right…

I lost a client today.  No, this loss won’t really affect our bottom line. (OK, everything affects your bottom line, but this client contributed less than 0.0X% to our gross.)  But, that’s not the point.  I lost a client today.  It’s personal.  It’s because of something I did not do- not even something I did.  Something I thought was helping the client- but obviously, I was wrong.
