When will it stop?

Yes, we all know that we have inflation- mostly due to weather related issues blocking our supply chains.  But, health care costs (yet again) jumped almost 10% last year.  (That’s more than double the previous year’s increase  of “only” 4.3%; one of the lowest in a while.)  This one, though, is the highest increase is 2 decades!  Coupling that with our modest drop in GDP (gross domestic product) means healthcare glommed some 20% (compared to 17.6%) of the economy last year.

Telemedicine is in trouble as the pandemic wanes

The pandemic elevated the acceptance of telemedicine.  Both physicians and patients recognized its abilities during the times of quarantine- approaching some 32% of all office and outpatient health encounters.  I really thought this could be the boost the technology needed to turn the corner.  (I’ve been advocating telemedicine for 40 years- always expecting it to take off.)

Bye, bye, Telemedicine?

So, we’ve gotten used to telemedicine.  Sure, many of us wanted this to be available decades ago, but state regulators and the HHS (Health and Human Services) weren’t willing to let us participate.  State regulators want all their health practitioners to be licensed in-state; too many telemedicine practitioners are from different states and lack the local credential.  HHS had no clue how to compensate practitioners.

What hath the Pandemic Wrought?

So, we’ve been talking how President Biden is going to start having the IRS begin investigating pass-through businesses and other ventures the rich use to harbor their wealth.  He is going to start to examine the net bank deposits of these firms- to see if there is any hiding of profits from the IRS.
