We are in a heap of trouble.  No, I’m not talking about the climate change issues enunciated recently by the UN panel.  Those are scary- but we might be able to change that course.   If we work together and properly.

Now, that “if” is pretty damned big.  Because the more imminent threat to us Americans is COVID-19 and its variants.  And, there, the problem is that 30% of Americans simply refuse to be inoculated.  Which means our hopes of a normal life have evanesced.

(I understand- to a very small degree- why some of these folks are resistant to the claims of scientists and the medical profession.   After all, the media told folks that Brexit [that could never happened] was promoted by the Russians and dragged folks in with poorly controlled social media.  And, the same media declared that TheDonald could never win- but did due to Russian interference and social media joining in the spread of such disinformation.   In NEITHER of these two cases has straightforward data been provided the public demonstrating these truths.  [Please tell me what the f… the FBI has been doing all this time.])

(Top that off with the initial admonitions of the CDC when the pandemic was first stirring- telling us to keep 6 feet apart, and wash our hands [to the tune and timing of Happy Birthday]- but did not need masks.  Only to have that caveat changed within 20 days- masks were valid adjuvants to our arsenal of protections.)

[Most Americans have no idea that science relies on facts KNOWN- not guessed- which means we need to adjust our recommendations to match the newest data that arrives.  (This also explains to some degree the resistance against climate change.)  And, then, poof, in the fastest time ever, vaccines are being offered to the public.  With ONLY provisional approval.  (Again, why the f… has the FDA not changed the approval to permanent.  The data is clear.)]

Those facts explain the current problem in America.  Every state that has above-average inoculation participation has below average hospitalizations.  Every state that has below-average inoculation rates is encountering the heightened fourth wave of infection and death from COVID-19.

This new variant, delta, is far more virulent, far more infective that the original virus and the other three primary variants, and the original virus.  Moreover, this variant can populate our nasal passages- even if we are fully vaccinated (and virtually protected from death but could be subject to mild cases of the disease)- which means we are free to infect others, if we violate social distancing and/or are un-masked.   And, those most likely at risk?  The young- who are unable to be vaccinated and those who reject medical entreaties and also lack inoculations against the disease.

Before, in the first waves,  it was the elderly that succumbed to the disease.  But most of our elderly population has been properly vaccinated.  So, now, it’s the younger popuations who are succumbing- because, as was true in the initial stages of Obamacare (PPP) offerings- they believe they are superheroes and don’t need vaccination (or health insurance).

And, these folks are egged on by Trump-accolytes, Ron DeathSantis (Florida) and Greg Abbott without Costello (Texas), who refuse to let crowded cities and schools protect their citizens with mask requirements.  Claiming it’s a breach of freedom.

BS!  Are they going to let their citizens drive drunk?   Why not- aren’t they are restricting one’s right to imbibe to their hearts’ content.  And, are they repealing the statutes demanding children be inoculated against chicken pox and other childhood diseases?  Of course not.  They are just catering to the most truculent of our society who believe in the big lie (that used to be that the American Dream was alive and well- until TheDonald converted it to be that his election was stolen.  Only in his (deranged) mind).

We need to find a way to convince these folks that dying to preserve deranged politicians’ exhortations – or killing their kids- is inane.  They need to trust the scientists and health professionals trying to preserve our citizenry.

Remember- we hold these truths to be self-evident… that it’s life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness that are the inalienable rights.  IN THAT ORDER!
