OK. For the past two days, we spoke about STEM. That’s science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. (Here are the links to Monday’s and Friday’s posts.) Today, we’re switching gears to a different stem- stem cell therapy. And, we’ll stay on this topic for a day or two. (I hope to keep you engaged, too!)

Nipped in the bud?
Can you believe it? There are 600 clinics across the United States that provide stem cell treatments! Claiming they’ll fix your spinal cord break, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, and ALS, among other ailments.
A (non)shocking experience
Years ago, I had some traumatic accidents. Ones I was very lucky to survive. But, while I survived the experience, there were days when I could barely move. My back hurt so much; more than a few times my children had to call the paramedics to get me transported to the hospital. (I was stuck on the floor, unable to get up.)
Hack Me!
Every day we hear how our electronic safety is non-existent. Our eMails are hacked. Yahoo “checks” your eMail on behalf of the US government. Our electric grid is attacked and shut down (thankfully, only in a narrow geographical region and not nationwide- yet!).
Free Speech?
It all sounds so simple. But, it’s anything but.
Another example of why lawyers should keep their noses out of healthcare and technology. Because their knowledge is about as comprehensive as a high schooler’s. Which is probably the last time they undertook studying the subjects. (I wrote about this before … Britain determined that lawyers and judges needed to have better understanding of neuroscience, so it is now providing annual courses. America should do the same- including all of science, technology, and medicine.)
Bye-bye, Trans-Fats?
Contact(s)!
I have been wearing contacts for some 3 1/2 decades now. (OK. I just stopped. Somehow my eyes have become so much better that I no longer need correction for distance OR for reading. Who knew?) And, over that time, I have become distressed as to how the FDA “protected me” from the purported stupidity of others.
PANIC!!!!!!! (Please don’t!)
For starters, this is not a problem for most of us. Because most of us don’t live in Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, or even Nigeria. Which is exactly where the Ebola virus is a problem now. Yes, if folks do come to “here”, wherever your “here” is, it is a potential issue.
Is this BRAND really different?
I am sure this will amaze you as much as it did I. Naproxen- the over the counter drug sold by (almost) everybody and their grandmother- is different from different vendors. Besides being sold as generic Naproxen, it is also sold under various “brand” names- Aleve, Naprelan, Naprosyn, Anaprox, Apronax.
Safe and Effective?
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to deal with FDA (Food and Administration) approvals for a variety of drugs and devices. I admit, sometimes, it did not quite seem to be an ‘opportunity’, but, generally, I was most appreciative of the process.
