Tell me again that we can’t use stem cells…

Just like we did two decades ago- right before the s…t hit the fan and stem cell research was outlawed.  We made a (very crude) kidney using stem cells.  Now, folks smarter and more skilled than us are taking the steps to truly make dialysis a thing of the past.

Extracorporeal Improvements?

I am always amazed how ‘comfortable’ I am in a dialysis center.

How Dialysis WorksIt no longer confounds me that we are taking a person’s blood out of his or her body and circulating it through plastic tubing and a dialyzer (which is really nothing but a plastic membrane, often in hollow “pipe” configuration or as a sandwich with blood at the center) for hours. In essence, because the patient’s kidneys are failing to do so,  we are circulating the patient’s entire blood volume through this circuit 20 complete times to remove the toxins of daily living.

Where we get treatment matters?

The other shoe dropped?

A few months ago, I reported that a feeling I had for years is now backed up by data. I’m talking about the Dr. Erickson et. al. study which demonstrated that when chains take over independent dialysis clinics, patient care is compromised.  In particular, patient mortality and hospitalization rates were worse after the merger.

What Hath Obamacare Wrought?

I know, I know, I’m old.

Back when I was considering colleges, this place was called Drexel Tech. Even when I applied to grad/med schools, that’s what it was.
Now, it’s Drexel University- a hop, skip, and jump away from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.  (Right next door to Union Station- the grand railroad depot- in Philly, too!)  And, it even houses a medical school- and a school of public health now!

Water Homeostasis

We have two kidneys.  And, these two bean-shaped organs maintain some vital functions for us every day of our lives.  Sure, we recognize that they produce the urine that we excrete- the urine that contains body wastes.  They also purify the blood as it circuits from the heart to the rest of the body.

Sometimes a solution is so simple, we all miss it.

I knew Dr. Nathan Levin when he was at Mount Sinai and Beth Israel hospitals in New York.  Specifically, the director of their dialysis centers.  I had the pleasure of sharing many a dinner (always at an Indian restaurant, until I convinced him that there was a great kosher restaurant we should visit) and his knowledge.
