Spurring on Innovation for ESRD

Way, way back in the 1960s and 1970s, the NIDDK (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, a unit of the National Institutes of Health [NIH]) ran a series of programs to promote the development of better treatments to address kidney failure.

Is longer better?

A multicenter, multi-sponsor series of trials with the principal researcher of Dr. Laura Dember (the principal sponsor of the study was the University of Pennsylvania) attempted to discern if longer hemodialysis sessions would prove a better therapy for patients.  The other collaborating institutions include the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) [part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)], Fresenius Medical Care of North America, Davita Clinical Research, and the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH).

Dialysis Bonuses?

Sometimes you just have to share bad information.  Like a few weeks ago, when I reported that data indicated the nature of the microbiome population in a mom’s gut is associated with the development of autism spectrum disorders in their children.  (My goal in publicizing this data was to alert parents-to-be of the issue- and to consider fecal transplantation if that issue could be applied to them.)

Creative Accounting or Illegal Practice?

I am sure you are all wondering what’s been happening about the dialysis patient organizations- and, now, it seems that some dialysis clinics- are paying the health insurance premiums for dialysis patients. (I first discussed this issue here).   There is a new complainant- it’s not just private insurance companies now.

Stick it to me?

Can you imagine what your life would be if your kidneys failed?  You would probably be forced to give up your job (see below for more) and spend 3 days a week going back and forth to a dialysis clinic, where you would be hooked up to a machine for about 4 hours each time.  And, you still would only have some of your kidney functions fixed, not all of them.

Deadly Purple?

Taking that purple pill?  Well… maybe it’s time to reconsider.

I admit it.  I’ve never had a problem with acid reflux.  Oh, sure, once or twice a year, when I was sick, it’s been a very short affliction.  So, it’s easy for me to say stop.   But, even if it’s not easy to say stop- I’m telling you STOP RIGHT NOW!
