It is hard for folks of my age to realize that it was 55 years ago that Martin Luther King give his last speech ever,

Moreover, we wonder if MLK would have a different perspective, given all the political changes that have ensued. .  After all, 55 years ago, we were certain we were making positive steps integrating society.  But, over the last decade or so, we’ve see that the GOP has worked diligently to remove voting rights and civil  liberties, among other critical items, from consideration.

The holiday of Passover is imminent; that celebration of freedom which is often emulated b other peoples.   So, it is appropriate to consider the ramifications of folks like MLK and his assassination upon our lives;

4 April, 1968 Memphis

MLK was shot and killed in Memphis right about this moment 55 years ago.   Changing the texture of America immediately.  Martin Luther King’s last speech is always worth hearing. On days like today, it’s imperative.

And then I got to Memphis. And some began to say the threats, or talk about the threats that were out. What would happen to me from some of our sick white brothers?

Mountaintop speech

Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn’t matter with me now. Because I’ve been to the mountaintop. And I don’t mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land. And I’m happy, tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.
