Come on! You’ve been given much more time.
Because the 15th of April fell on a Sunday, the normal scheme of things would be that yesterday would have been the day to file your taxes. Except the IRS relies on Andover (MA) to process a bunch of electronically filed forms. And, the 16th of April was Patriot’s Day.
You know- that was the day that two deranged Chechen terrorists decided to upend the Boston Marathon. But, more importantly, this was the day to commemorate 243rd anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord. (Actually, the battles were held on the 19th of April, but convention has the celebration as the third Monday in April.)
To top it off, the 16th of April is Emancipation Day in the District of Columbia. 156 years ago, President Lincoln proclaimed that the more than 3000 slaves in the District were now free.
Given these two events, we all had until today to file our income taxes.
Which means you have less than 15 hours (from when this is actually published to my blog) to file your taxes.
Get crackin’- or get thee to our office ASAP (or electronically via Adjuvancy DOT SecureFilePro DOT com) with all your data and your driver’s license. If you don’t get your data into the IRS today (the Commonwealth of Virginia lets you hold off for another fortnight or so) today, you will be subject to penalties and interest because you are late!
Oh, yeah. An extension is only an extension to FILE. Your tax payments are always due NO LATER than TODAY.
Thanks for sharing this info. I knew it was Patriots Day in MA, as my company is based in Boston, but did not know that Andover MA processed a lot of the electronic forms. Thanks for the knowledge. 🙂

That is one of the reasons for the extension. (I recall celebrating Patriot’s Day in MA- and then a few years later, was amazed to hear it was Founder’s Day when I moved to Charlottesville.)
You are right. If not today, then it’s late, late, for a very important date. 😉
And, to boot, the IRS has lost its computer hookup. So, there are going to be a lot of folks who are going to be in trouble!
I enjoyed the history lesson. My extension was filed last week. 🙂
Remember, Cathy, the IRS only provides an extension to file- your payment was still due- in full- on Tax Day!
Fond memories of my first visit to Charlottesville and stumbling on Founders Day – we ended up having birthday cake at Monticello and admiring all the beautiful dogwoods in bloom at the University of Virginia.

I was flabbergasted when I found that Patriot’s Day was Founder’s Day (having moved from Brookline to Ann Arbor to Charlottesville). And, over the years forgot the association with the Boston Marathon.
