The old grey mare just…

I lost an old friend the other day.  He was with me most of the past 45 years.

He traveled with me as I drove to and from the catering halls and research labs I frequented in the late 60’s and early 70’s.  He commuted with me between New York and Cambridge, moved with me to Michigan- and then traveled down to Virginia.  (I admit it- he never traveled with me on my thrice weekly commute to California.  I just thought of that now…)

He helped my daughters with their soccer, my son with his football and basketball.  He even pitched in when one of my son’s friends manged to pop his tire on some road debris.   We worked together to reinflate the tire so he could get home.

I was so disappointed this weekend (ok, two weekends ago in reality) when he failed me.   I expected him to help me get my bike tires up to spec.  Instead, he made matters worse.

I was confused though.  He still had his tenor voice, still seemed up to the job, but he just didn’t have the strength he used to.Interflator

So, I had to replace my Interflator.  The 100 psi compressor that I bought way back in 1968 to insure I would never be waylaid by a flat- on my car or my bike.  And, it helped inflate soccer, basketballs, footballs, and the like over the decades.

I was amazed that the replacement was available for about the same price I paid some 45 years ago.

But, I doubt this new one will last as long… Then, again, I don’t expect to be here either in 45 years.

    1. Thanks for the comment, Laura…
It was an old pet- one that let me do everything I love to do (it really didn’t help my swimming, but did blow up those tires my kids used when we went to the George Washington National Forest)…

  1. Sorry for your loss. Odd how we can get attached to something, an item. But when you have something that long, it only seems to make sense. With luck, you won’t be replacing it every year. Hope the new one lasts long enough though.

    1. I got attached to it (pun intended)… I used it at least twice a month for my bike tires, my children’s (and the neighbors’ children) balls. What a functional device.
Thanks for the visit and comment, Jeffrey.
