Budget Malarkey

Counting Social Security and Medicare, the US Government spend 20 cents of every dollar to fund the Defense Department.  And, worse yet, almost a nickel of the total budget is assigned  to Iraq and Afghanistan.  And, the $ 700 billion defense budget is the same as China, France, Russia, Japan, Germany, India, Canada, Israel and NINE (9) other countries spend … combined together.

Let us not forget that we spent 25 cents of every dollar on health care.  That’s up from about 10 cents on the dollar just 20 years ago.  So, you can see that whether you are in love with Obamacare or not, we must get a handle on health care- because the prognosis is that we will have to spend 1/3 of the US budget on healthcare within 10 years, if there is no reform.

Moreover, in spite of the desire of a certain party to fire all government workers, claiming it will save money, it won’t really make a dent.  Because 65% of the federal employee base is from the armed services and civilians assigned to departments of Defense, Veterans Affairs, and Homeland Security.   So, we can’t theoretically save 11 cents of every dollar (like having no employees would work anyway), but it sure did make a good sound bite, didn’t it?

  1. I must be having a crabby day because I read this and thought “It doesn’t matter. The government will always figure out more ways to take our money and spend it.” It’s really awesome (and by awesome I mean not awesome) that we’re told to save and get a handle on our debt personally – and we’re declined for loans and refused credit – but the government pretty much gets to keep taking, spending and pretending they’re doing it for us. Sigh.

    1. I’m not sure that the government always finds more ways to take money and spend it, Carol Lynn… I am sure that there are lobbyists trying to convince lawmakers to enact regulations and laws that let them get more than their fair share- and that is the biggest problem we face- locally, state-wide, and nationally…
