If my magic wand had batteries…
It always amazes me that U.S. dialysis patients are not more healthy than the rest of the world’s. Even though our program costs more than everyone else’s. Of course, many of our dialysis patients end up as dialysis patients because they have diabetes- which is the proximate cause of their kidney failure. And, keeps our dialysis population at the top of the charts (as in “way too many patients”). And, this also often leads to cardiovascular complications, which reduces the ability of these patients to undergo kidney transplants.
Data Overload? Or, Gimme More?
How we think and act is not something we developed on our own. No, our brains have evolved over the millennia to learn routes, to know where things are, etc. Things that until recently were the critical items in our lives.
Is there a STEM shortage?
So, here we go again. The economy seems to be looking better- maybe. The government reported that overall hiring is increasing in the US.
Living Wages- redux
So, yesterday, I spoke about how taxes make a difference to the various folks in America. From the working poor to the middle class, to the rich and super-rich.

In health care, new innovations either make things possible- sometimes at lower costs, but just as often these developments just cost more money. Which is why health care comprises some 20% of our GDP.
Wage Follies
The US minimum wage is $ 7.25. There have been recent efforts to raise this to something more viable, but many (of a certain political ilk) aver that this would devastate business. But, let’s consider a few real facts. Continue reading Wage Follies
MOOC mucking…
So, it’s time to see if this experiment is working. Which experiment? MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). I explained how these work (or at least the Harvard/MIT/UC Berkeley version, called edX) and explained that MIT also has had open courseware for more than a decade.
A peek behind the Chrysler curtains…
Before I begin today’s blog, I should tell you that I am a real Chrysler fan. My car rental agency only handled their vehicles. Chrysler was the firm with the best engineering in the business; maybe, not the best designs always, but… (I also stopped being an exclusive Chrysler guy when Mercedes Benz took them over.) And, now, as you can see from the pictures, Chrysler is back in the news.
