The Official First Day of Elul- but the second day of the new moon

This is the second day of  Rosh Chodesh Elul,  a  minor holiday.   The first (yesterday) was the anniversary of my eldest daughter’s bat mitzva. (I won’t say how many years!)   Mazel tov, Shosh! The second day of the holiday (today) is  the 26th anniversary (called a Yahrzeit) of the death of my mom.

You think it’s just Thursday…

Today begins a new Jewish month- the month of Elul.  (Actually, it is the last day of Av- but it is a new moon, one that traverses two days.  So, the last day of Av and the first day of Elul are celebration as the new moon days..  Also, Elul begins our introspection and review of our lives- so we are ready for the next holidays- The Days of Awe- Rosh Hashana and Yom Kipur (which are in the month of Tishrei).

Where did the moon go?

In two days, the month of Elul will end.  Five years ago, on the first day of Elul, I described the process of self-assessment.   Today we are 28 days into the 40 day period of determining how we can make our lives- and the lives of others- better.  (You can also search for Elul in the index to the left and see more of my thoughts on this “resolution-making” period.)
