Telecommuting?

I am tired of hearing that Marissa Mayer made a mistake.  For those of you who live under a rock, she’s the head of Yahoo that was hired to turn the company around.  And, when she came off her maternity leave, she decreed that working from home is not in Yahoo’s best interest. Her ostensible reasons?  Yahoo needs to move quickly, it needs to focus on collaboration and communication.  And, in her mind, that means working remotely full-time doesn’t work. That also means that some of the Yahoo employees are going to have to move- or quit. Teleworking- 1 or more day a week Immediately, many folks (in and out of the company) began complaining, citing that there is data that folks are more productive when working from home.  That folks need to balance life and work- and this move does not fit that model. Cali Ressler and Jody Thompson, the creators of ROWE (Results Only Work Environment),  took tremendous umbrage at Ms. Mayer’s approach.  Their site posted this letterContinue reading Telecommuting?

We interrupt this message…

I was listening to NPR today.  (OK, I listen to NPR every day, but that’s not what this is about.)   The panelists were discussing that, other than typos, there are few factual errors in the newspapers. This is because news reporters are very diligent, trying to analyze what is really happening and reporting those findings to us.  And, it’s hard to keep that focus, with all the noise that’s out there.  With folks wanting to know why this or that is not reported. That’s because so many bogus outlets exist out there, giving wrong information all the time.

Leadership<>Management, Part 2

No Gravatar

Yesterday, I explained that leadership is not management – and management is not leadership.  But, that did not take the conversation far enough.   Too many leaders extol those wonderful values and ideals to their teams- but never get involved in the nitty-gritty of getting things done.  Followers- and other leaders- trust leaders who have ‘done it’.  And, one of the best ways to develop trust is to show folks how it’s done- once, twice, thrice.

Leadership <> Management

Leadership.  Management.   Don’t get confused- they are different and every enterprise needs both. And, rarely are they found in the same person at the same time.  It comes down to the raison d’etre for each organization.  Vision, Mission, and Goals. Leaders set the vision and develop the strategy for the team.  Vision is why the enterprise exists in the first place; strategy is how the enterprise plans to execute to achieve that vision, given the reality of the market, competition, regulation, and trends.   Managers  direct people to obey; leaders motivate people to achieve more than they thought possible.

I want you to read about baseball? Really?

No Gravatar

If you’ve been reading my blog, you know that I am a big “phan” of the Phillies.  And, nowadays, teams trade their people at the drop of the hat.  (To be honest, that is not a Phillies trait, but it does happen.)  Last year, Jayson Werth, our right fielder was a free agent and though he could get a big boost in pay.  He did- but now he’s a Washington National.  (I do see every Phillies game here in DC, where I live, as well as in Citizen’s Bank Park.  I may not root for the Nats, but I still follow Jayson.)

Gimme that “old time religion”- and give it to everyone else, too!

No Gravatar

You’ve heard me (drone, rant, speechify) about the need for vision, mission, and goals for every enterprise and every individual.  And, I also believe in branding- but, that’s less important for small firms than delivering what is expected (or more) every time.  We- that’s you, me, and everyone else need to make our efforts into a religion, a belief, an “ISM”- Integrity, Simplify, and Magnify.

Man on a Mission (the sexist version still sounds best, sorry)

I was working with a client this past week to refocus their company.  Now that the recession seems to be ending (I know, the light at the end of the tunnel; but the issue this time seems more related to our psychological reactions- our belief has been shattered), it wants to insure its growth and profits over the next decade.  Its people must work in concert to do so.

Firing on all cylinders

No Gravatar

That’s an old expression- one that may go by the waysides, as my generation passes the torch.  It means one (or one entity) is operating at full capacity, at optimum speed.  It is a more vernacular expression for “The Adjuvancy”- an organization that optimizes the performance of all the entities in a mixture, ensuring maximum benefit to all participants.
