So, today is “fake” Columbus Day. Another example of our government manipulating events so we have 3 day weekends. The real Columbus Day is Friday- right after the new moon of (Mar) Cheshvan. It has the moniker ‘Mar’ (bitter) because it is the month of the flood- the one Hashem inflicted upon the world (or certainly the bulk of the Middle East)- way back when.

I remember being assigned to read ‘The Jungle’ by Upton Sinclair and ‘Elmer Gantry’ by Sinclair Lewis way back in what is now called middle school. Admittedly, I often confused the two writers’ names, but I enjoyed the two books immensely. And, learned that our commerical (and religious) industries still need a lot of work. (That still hasn’t changed all that much in half a century, either.)
