Tonight is the first night, the advent of the holiday of Passover. Other than Rosh Hashana and Yom Kipur, this is the one holiday that most Jews celebrate. Oh, Chanuka comes close, but most folks still don’t light the menora.
Most of you who know me recognize that I am an adherent as watch me do and make the world better one step at a time. (The rule is to take one step forward all the time, even though you won’t finish it today. That’s Tikun Olam.)
I am so sory that I didn’t post yesterday.
And you may not realize that for the past weeks, the posts were automatically loaded. Which mean that my queue is now depleted.
As traditional Jewish person, my calendar is governed by new moons. The new moon sets the new month, which is called Rosh Chodesh (the beginning of the month) in Hebrew. Tonight, there will be a new moon. The new moon for the month of Nissan..
I am gong to date myself again. But, I’m actually proud of the issue, so I could care less.
Tonight (as is true for all Jewish holidays- all “days” start in the evening) is a holiday. The holiday of Purim (“Lots”)- the story of Esther, her uncle Mordechai, the demon Haman, and King Achashverosh.
Yet, y’all know how my mind likes to wander and find links and parallels. Even on Valentine’s Day. (That’s a holiday for which I was barred from participation as a child, since it was a”St Valentine’s” kind of day.) So, I don’t have a lot of context for this day.
As I stated two weeks ago, when we welcomed the new month of Shvat, the name for today’s holiday is actually just the date. Tu is how one would pronounce the two letter abbreviation for 15 (like Roman Numerals, Hebrew has a number system that uses the letters in various combinations.)
There was no moon last night, which means today is the first day of Rosh Chodesh. In particular, last night and today are the Rosh Chodesh of Sh’vat.
