It’s the first Monday in September. Which means it’s Labor Day. If you grew up in NY City, then, you know it’s been a holiday for 135 years. But, it took more than a few years for it to become a national holiday.

I should tell you that I don’t routinely read the obits. Oh, sure, I have friends who grab my paper to reach the Metro Section and flip to the end. where the obits reside. I always tell them I’ll let them know if they are wirtten up there- there’s no need to study those pages.
Rosh Chodesh Elul 2017
Tonight begins a new moon. In my religion, that means it is a new month (called Rosh Chodesh), and this one is Elul. This new moon crosses two days.. The first day, (the one starting tonight) is the 20th anniversary of the death of my mom. This anniversary is called a Yahrzeit. The second day of the new moon of Elul is anniversary of my daughter’s bat mitzva- and tomorrow happens to be her secular birthday, to boot.
No water. No food.
Today is the last day of July. Tonight is also the 9th day of Av. The end of this Hebrew month is the day my mother died and the day my oldest daughter was born. An auspicious moment.

I’m not sure about this trip.
First of all, it may mean that my blog posts are going to appear at random times over the next few days. Because I will be traveling to places that may not have the best internet service (or, at all!)- and there is a significant time shift. But, that’s only part of the reasons why I’m not sure about this trip.
CCXLVI. Oh, and XXVI, 2!
Ah, facts. Long before our current president, we weren’t always meticulous about dates and facts. After all, we did decide to use 4 July 1776 as the date we proclaimed our independence from Britain. Even if the Declaration of Independence was issued two or three days earlier. And, that means we celebrate our Freedom 241 years later today. (Thankfully, it is not among those days that Congress, in its infinite wisdom [read as stupidity], elected to move to Mondays, affording a longer weekend. ) We celebrate the day with fireworks, with going to the beach, with barbeques, and with get-togethers.
Father’s Day
This Sunday is Father’s Day. And, as has been true for many of these (alternative fact) holidays, I’ll be spending it with my kids. At the Phillies stadium.
The Russians AREN’T Coming. They’re already here!
We have a problem in America. (The problem extends around the world, but I am most intimately familiar with what goes on here.) We have government officials (and political flacks) who never answer THE question. They deflect, they modify the question so that their canned answer can be employed- without providing the answer to that burning question that was posed.

Sh’vuot- the Feast of Weeks.
48, 49, 50!
We’ve been counting our days since the Pesach (Passover) Seder. 50 days after we were freed from Egypt (Mitzrayim- a place of narrow straits), we were waiting by Mount Sinai (sorry- NOT in the “Sinai Peninsula”, more likely in Saudi Arabia, near an active volcano), to receive the 10 Commandments. Where the words were seen- yes, seen. I admit, until I saw the effects of a rocket plant explosion in Henderson, Nevada, I had no idea you really could see “sound”. Not surprising that those in attendance were totally awed…
It’s not just a day off.
If you live in the States, the odds are you have no clue that today is “Decoration Day”. Then, it was always the 30th of May. Not the “If it’s Monday, we need a holiday” version we are celebrating today (the 29th of May).
