The IPAB: No, it’s NOT a new Apple Product!

No Gravatar

OK.  It’s getting close.  Finally, some of the real provisions of the health insurance reform act passed last year are going to come into view.  One of the first things that will make a difference- a big one- is IPAB.  No, it’s not an Apple product.  It stands for Independent Payment Advisory Board.  What is does is something pretty special- it will put the brakes on Medicare spending, should the costs rise too quickly and too high.

My 1st Blogiversary!

No Gravatar

It’s been a year since I began writing this blog (Cerebrations; you’ll see why I make this distinction later).  At first, I entered posts twice a week.  Since I research everything I write (getting real references, comparing data and research from various sources, checking facts that I proffer to my clients routinely to give you the reference, etc.) each one took about an hour. And, I kept my blogs to 300 words, so they could be read in a minute.

Does your IQ really matter?

No Gravatar

So, are you smart- or just motivated? When I was growing up, my elementary  (K-9) school loved to test the heck out of us.  I swear that I could have recited the test questions on the Stanford Binet Achievement test by heart, they tested us so often.  This IQ test was actually used as a weapon by the school.  Oh, no, they would never say that, but it was. You see, our grade was divided into two classes- the smart class and the dumb class.  And, to be in the dumb class your IQ had to be 120. The smart class cut-off was a little less stringent, but it was somewhere around 140 or 150.  (No, I am not making this up!)IQ spectrum (70% between 85 and 120)

Are you ready? Really, ready?

Been a funny week.  First, some crazies promised us they would be raptured and we would be condemned.  But, I knew better- the next day was a special one; my relatives (long, long ago) all survived in spite of the desire to kill us all.  Then, not one- not two- not three- but four- folks considered chucking it all in (their businesses), feeling overwhelmed.  After those talk downs, another dilemna- an impending divorce (over money, not love).  [Before I forget, PLEASE read (or re-read) this post about family finances.] And, if that were  not enough, we are preparing a new service offering. Now YOU can 3D print- really!

No Gravatar

3D printing is now really coming to you!  I have written about this intriguing concept several times (each word is a separate hyperlink) in the past few months.  No, a company is selling the device for consumers. MakerBot, from an industrial sector of Brooklyn, is selling a kit ($ 1299) that lets you make products you design. This company is the brainchild of Bre Prettis, Adam Meyer, and Zach Smith.

I want you to read about baseball? Really?

No Gravatar

If you’ve been reading my blog, you know that I am a big “phan” of the Phillies.  And, nowadays, teams trade their people at the drop of the hat.  (To be honest, that is not a Phillies trait, but it does happen.)  Last year, Jayson Werth, our right fielder was a free agent and though he could get a big boost in pay.  He did- but now he’s a Washington National.  (I do see every Phillies game here in DC, where I live, as well as in Citizen’s Bank Park.  I may not root for the Nats, but I still follow Jayson.)

Techie? Businessperson?

I used to commute from Charlottesville (VA) to Long Beach (CA). Yes, really. It started out as three days in one place and four in another. It escalated (degraded?) into alternating 8 and 30 hour segments for some two or three years. (It’s how I learned how to sleep on airplanes- and get lets of work done on them, too.) But, it’s also how I learned to get plenty of planning done on my 75 minute drive (don’t figure out what speed that was) to Dulles Airport.
Why do I bring this up? Because, I have been driving to and from Citizen’s Bank Park every week or so, for years. And, on one of the rare occasions that I did this trip solo, I got a lot of thinking done, too. (Good thing- we’ve been working on a new concept. This gave me plenty of time to get the edges honed down.) I also figured out what makes my work with helping new and existing companies so exceptional. (I obviously have no problems with hubris 🙂 .)
