Electro Acoustic Hydraulic Therapy (eHAT)

I was reading this information about a development in Israel and felt a twinge.

You see, I have been working on a “something” to preclude folks decaying conditions that would require the onset of dialysis. (Do you realize that chronic kidney disease [CKD]  affects some10% of the world’s population?) I say “something” because it is not clear if or how my concept can obtain FDA approval.  It’s a pretty simple chemical concoction.  If we make it a food, then the poor folks (which comprise most of the folks who will need this) won’t be able to afford it, since medical foods are not covered by most health care programs.

Curespec

But, it turns out that this concept proposed by Curespec is completely different than my idea.

Electro-acoustic hydraulic therapy (eHAT)

Curespec is a completely different avenue.  The firm is based in Yeyud Monosson, just outside of Ben Gurion Airport, in Israel.  (It is actually a spinoff company from Medispec, a firm that specializes in electro-hydraulic acoustic therapy [eHAT]).  eHAT is an acoustic wave treatment that is less intense that shockwave treatments, using 10% of the energy that modality requires.  (Medispec’s market is cardiological and urological disorders (including erectile dysfunction}, as well as kidney and ureter stone eradication.)

This company was founded by Avner Spector (Chairman, who also founded Medispec) and Alex Slutzker (VP Clinical Affairs) , and is now expanding its clinical trials of Nephrospec.  (This device is already deployed for use at the Sheba Medical Center and the Shaare Zedek Medical Center (both in Israel), and a few other sites in Germany, Switzerland, and the USA.)

Nephrospec should help folks with stage 3 and stage 4 CKD from needing dialysis for a year.  They hope to improve the functionality so patients will not need to go on dialysis forever.  (They also believe that Nephrospec has utility in treating hypertension, one of the risk factors in developing kidney disorders.)

How does it do that?  It promotes new blood vessel formation, as well as restoring damaged tissue functionality.   The course of therapy is six treatment sessions over a three week period.

Curespec has raised about $ 1 million from private investors, $3.4 million from the Mayo Clinic, and $ 3 million from Medispec.  They are seeking funding for a $ 10 million round to complete its clinical trials.

We will be following the course of those tests and will report further on the developments.

  1. One can hope for the best, that this can prove to be effective AND something our broken medical system can adopt. But I can see insurance companies now “oh, this only gives an extra year; we won’t pay for it”. I hope I’m not being too cynical.
