We all should have guessed this would happen.
After the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Students for Fair Admission assertion that preferential treatment in college (Harvard, University of North Carolina) acceptances is illegal, parents who were outraged at the manipulation of matriculation regulations at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology would take action.
(Tere’s a litany of posts about this elite high school (search for Jefferson and TJ in my index) and how the rules for admission have changed. You can also bet this this change in admission policy is a primary reason that the US News and & World Report noted that TJ dropped from being the Number 1 High school in the nation down to Number 5.)
The parental/alumni group now calls itself “Coalition for TJ”. They have petitioned the Supreme Court to review the anti-discrimination case against TJ and the Fairfax County Public Schools. TJ dismissed its admissions policy that was merit based and replaced it with a lottery system, so that more Black and Hispanic students would be accepted.. (TJ is part of the Fairfax County school system.) The parent/alumni group has chosen legal advisors- the Pacific Legal Foundation.
(There is a second case, this one against Virginia Tech. This situation involved campus free speech policies. (Circuit Courts have split on whether the policies do indeed suppress free speech. “The circuits are split, three to two, on whether bias-response teams objectively chill speech,” the filing said. “The Fifth, Sixth, and Eleventh Circuits are on one side, while the Fourth and Seventh are on the other.”)
We’ll see what SCOTUS rules soon enough.
