No, Roy. Not another wine warning. (This one is different!)

Here’s another discussion about alcohol. But, this one has a completely different basis- so read it carefully!

glass of wine

Exercise physiologists and nutritional experts are notifying folks that it is NOT a good idea to drink alcohol before, during, or right after exercising!!!!

Peloton exercise

Doing so will not only affect our performance, but make the actual effort more difficult.

Here are some basic facts about this phenomenon.  Drinking before or after workouts have about the same affect on our bodies- and both are negative.  The best time duration between alcohol consumption and exercise is about four hours.  (Yes, I know it takes 25 hours to clear our body of alcohol.)  And, for every alcoholic  drink, we should add a glass of water to our regime.  (I am not a fan of those electrolyte drinks, but if you are, go ahead and try them.)

Each of us have different tolerances- due to body size, frequency of our alcohol use, and our nutritional states.  Even so, we should limit ourselves to one or two drinks before after our exercise sessions.  (And, don’t forget that alcohol is a diuretic- which means frequent urination with the potential for dehydrating our bodies.  Moreover, alcohol augments insulin secretion, which will deplete our body sugar, so we may lack sufficient energy for our exercise protocol.)

One more caveat- alcohol consumption and exercise often means that we are subject to accidents and injuries.

Finally, make sure to eat a balanced meal that includes carbohydrates and protein along with (or after) any alcoholic beverages you consume to ensure we have enough energy to sustain ourselves throughout our workout.

  1. As a massage therapist, Irevving folks to drink some extra water after a session, to enhance the effects, and occasionally get the, ‘does wine (beer) count?’ … umm, not really!
Decades ago, one of my coworkers and I were attending a massage workshop and went to a nice restaurant after our afternoon session, and then back to our hotel – why not have one drink from the bar ? ….
The next day we were struggling all morning … and too embarrassed to mention that we 20 year massage veterans had broken the rule ….
The NEXT morning, half the class was moaning – they had gone for dinner and had that glass of wine!! …
The form was Ashiatsu, we alternated between receiving this deep work AND learning the routine, which is rather vigorous!

  2. Well, I can say in good conscience that I don’t do any of this. I don’t excercise a lot, and if I do, I don’t drink.
Also when I drink, it’s usually one glass because that’s basically all I feel comfortable with.
I had no idea about these facts though, thank you for sharing!
