Oh, my. Oh, my….
One of my favorite characters bit the dust. Dobie Gillis. (OK, you know him- or not- as the actor, Dwayne Hickman. Dwyane died on 9 January.)
I looked up to Dobie from right after my birthday (in 1959) until 1963. Until they canceled his existence.
The official name of the show was “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis”. And, I watched it (religiously) on Channel 2 (CBS) during those years. It was the first manifestation of the “beat generation” on TV.
Dobie’s right hand was Maynard G. Krebs (aka Bob Denver, who many of you young’uns think was Gilligan of Gilligan’s Island- sorry I never fell for that program.) It didn’t hurt that the music chosen for the program was often jazz- the jargon of my choice.
But, what made Dobie so interesting to me is that he simply failed to get the girl of his dreams- while ignoring the beauty (Zelda) who desperately wanted him. Yes, it reminded me that we should pay attention to those who truly are interested in us- as opposed to the chimeric quest for someone unattainable.
But, let’s get real. The starlets on this show were amazing- Tuesday Weld and Marlo Thomas, among others. Not to mention Dobie’s protagonists- Warren Beatty, Bill Bixby, and Ryan O’Neal. Oh, wait- we could also add Auguste Rodin as a costar- since “The Thinker” was prominent in each and every show.
Yes, I know the show lasted only four years. But, those were great years for me.
And, I will always miss Do-oh-bie!
Yes, another reminder. While we’ve had two days to file our taxes (and some of us still must wait until the 15th of February, there’s still 82 days left to file. You could really use my book to help you pay the lowest amount of taxes required by law.
So I was not familiar with Dobie Gillis, so I watched part of a couple. Plenty of eye rolls at his antics. But the lesson you brought out is probably the best—about ignoring what we can have that’s good in pursuit of the fictitious unattainable.
And I always enjoy seeing what new word you’re gonna pop out that I have to look up. You did not disappoint. Todays word was chimeric—I probably should have known that word, but I didn’t. Now I do! You’ve expanded my vocabulary!
Sorry that he died. Just a lesson to me to live each day as if it is my last, because one of these days, it will be!
Blessings,
Laurie

Sorry you weren’t familiar with Dobie. And, yes, we eye rolled, too! That was part of the fun, Laurie…
Thanks for the visit and the comment.
Sounds like an “all-star” cast. I actually enjoy watching vintage shows so I will keep an eye out for this one.

Let me know what you think, Jennifer! I’d love to hear.
I remember Dobie, is that showing our age?

At our age, it’s no longer an embarassing fact, right Martha?
I watched Dobie Gillis a few times in reruns as a kid. I wasn’t a fan. Maybe I just didn’t get the whole dating thing when I watched — it might have been above my level.
I saw the news that the star of the show had died. There was a flurry of famous deaths around that time. I watched some reruns of some of the other stars to relive some memories.
Have a lovely day!

Definitely have been a flurry of deaths lately- and, at least on a positive note, they weren’t related to COVID-19, Dominique.
I watched a few episodes in syndication, but somehow missed some of the things that would have made it a lot more interesting to me. Like Marlo Thomas. Or the beat generation aspect of it. Or even the jazz. I guess I didn’t pay much attention to it, but instead probably just had it on n the background.
I was never impressed with the guest stars; I simply liked the primary 3 characters, Jeanine. Oh- and the music.
Oh no! How could I not have known this? But I didn’t. Both my husband and I watched that show.

Then, I am glad- and sad- that I shared the news.
I love Jazz too… In fact our local Jazz Society is starting back up after 2 years (almost) of not performing live… because of Covid. As far as “The Many Lives of Dobie Gillis”, I didn’t see that show… but I like the reminder that we should pay attention to those who are truly interested in us….

Thanks so much for the visit and comment, Diana…
And, hopefully, the danger from COVID won’t be so pronouonced that you can’t enjoy a jazz concert or two- or six…
I was not familiar with this show at all, and now I know I want to look for it as both my husband and I enjoy watching old shows. I am sure I will find myself rolling my eyes too, but that is always part of the fun…
