The 1rst day of Shvuot

I stayed up all Sunday night.   And, now my menu is limited to dairy meals for today and tomorrow.  Because those are the traditions of the Feast of Weeks, Shvuot.

50 days ago was the holiday of Pesach, the day freedom was granted to the Jewish slaves and they left Egypt.  We’ve since been attacked by the Egyptians, who realized that we were not coming back.  We’ve crossed the Sea of Reeds on relatively dry land.

And, now, after we’d been waiting at the bottom of Har Sinai…Mount Sinai… to get the Tora, we received the story of our people and the laws to which we adhere.

And, when the Supreme Being uttered the words of these laws, the words were visible.  Don’t scoff.  Years ago, when I was already a middle-aged man, I finally understood how that happened.

I was in the Nevada desert, near Henderson.  When a rocket fuel production facility blew up.  It was loud.  It was scary.  And, I saw the sound waves.  (You can see a version of those waves about 20 seconds into this video.)

I finally understood that portion.  And, for the next days, I will study various texts to learn more about our rules and traditions.

May the Supreme Being bring you peace.   Happy Shvuot holiday to all.

I will be posting a regular blog on Wednesday, when the holiday is over…
