State Tax Deadline Changes

17 May is now the due date for 1040 tax returnsWe still have 25 days to file our federal taxes.  But, which states also changed their tax deadlines?

So, it seems that 35 states (including Washington, DC) have agreed with the Federal decision to make our taxes due on the 17th of May, instead of 15 April.

Please note this change- as is true for the federal date change- has not altered the due date for estimated tax payments!  These governments expected payment for the first estimated taxes on 15 April (Virginia has always been 1 May).  The second installment comes due on 15 June.

The following states now anticipate that we will file and comply with the law by 17 May 2021.

35 states changes their tax deadlines

Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Colorado, The District of Columbia, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The state of Maryland elected to change its deadline to 15 July 2021.  This deadline, as opposed to the states above, also is the due date for both the first and second quarter estimated tax payments.

Alabama was more creative.  The deadline did not change- so interest on taxes owed as of 15 April 2021 apply.  But, there will be no late payment penalties as long as payments are remitted by 17 May.

Idaho couldn’t get it’s act together.  A bill was introduced to change the deadline to 17 May- but no agreement was made.   Instead the governor implored the Tax Commission to change the due date to 17 May, which it did.  Hmm….

There are other special provisions.  Due to the winter storms that wreaked havoc in Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas, the IRS had already changed the deadlines to 15 June 2021 for those states.  Which is why some states are letting residents of those hurt by winter storms to file late for the following states in question.  Idaho will let those residing in Texas and Oklahoma to file taxes in Idaho by 14 June. Indiana covers all three states- and complies with the federal deadline of 15 June.  Louisiana extended the deadline to those in Louisiana and Texas until 15 June.  New Jersey will let those in Texas file late, until 15 June, as long as the legend (in Black Ink) is added to the center of the New Jersey tax return: “Presidential Disaster Relief Area”.

I hope that clears things up for you folks.
