Have a heart…

Another stem cell development.

For this development , Drs. Tal Dvir and Assaf Shapria (along with PhD candidate Nadav Noor and Drs.  Reuven Edri, Idan Gal, and Lior Wertheim; all from Tel Aviv University) removed omental tissue (the omentum is the sheet of fatty tissue that stretches over the abdomen, affording vital immune responses ) from a patient and converted them into pluripotent stem cells.  And, then induce those cells to form cardiomyocytes and endothelial cells.  These two cell types are then incorporated into a hydrogel that can then be printed by the 3D printer.  Initially, these structures were simply cardiac patches.

3D Printed Heart

This group advanced the 3D printing technique so it could produce thick, vascularized, and perfusable (that means blood flows through the patch) patches.

No, this is not ready for prime time.  Because the size of the heart is tiny.  Yet, in every way, this 3D printed heart matches the patient’s cellular, biochemical, anatomical, and immunological properties.  But, the goal is now to scale up the growth to produce a human sized heart.

And, the group has modified the process to produce much larger systems, as shown below.

This is critical since heart disease still is the leading cause of death in the USA.
