GOP<> Democracy

Yes, that’s a strong headline.  But, it’s an understatement of the actions the party has been perpetrating on the American populace for a while.

We can start with little things.  Like screaming (no, I am not exaggerating) that there is rampant voter fraud in the US.  When the data over the decades, since Chicago cleaned up its electoral systems, demonstrates that voter fraud is virtually non-existent.

Why would someone claim this, knowing it is false?  To perpetrate voter suppression, to stop Blacks and Hispanics from exercising their right to vote.  Since it is no longer tenable to re-establish poll taxes, the GOP instituted the need for special identification cards and registration processes- closing the places to obtain them that are nearby to Black neighborhoods, cutting the hours of operation, etc.

NC Voter Fraud- by the GOP

Oh- and where has voter fraud been proven to exist in the past year or so?  In North Carolina, to elect a White biased pastor.  Manipulating the one known weakness of our electoral system- the absentee ballot.  In this case, Mark Harris and his minions had absentee ballots collected and either altered or destroyed, ordered absentee ballots for folks who had not requested them (to stuff the ballot box), etc.  These acts were so flagrant even the  NC GOP establishment was forced to not certify the election.

And, as long as we are discussing North Carolina, let’s not forget what North Carolina  GOP did when the voters had enough of Pat McCrory and the Republican establishment recently.  To render the election of Roy Cooper (the winning Democratic candidate for governor) moot, the GOP passed a series of laws to emasculate the power of the executive branch.  (This was after McCrory refused to concede, demanding a full and total recount.  [BTW, when the vote this past November was subject to a recount in Florida and Georgia (Kemp, one of the mendicants behind rampant voter fraud invalidated ballots and stripped the vote from more than 100K folks to ensure his election), the GOP complained this was unprecedented and that the Democratic party was trying to steal votes and the election.  Again- the only verified broad-scale fraud in US elections has been the current issue in North Carolina, perpetrated by the GOP.])

It’s not just North Carolina.

Evidence of Wisconsin Gerrymandering

Nope.  The Wisconsin citizenry finally recognized Scott Walker needed to go.  So, they voted for Tony Evers- with one of the highest turnouts the state has ever seen in a non-Presidential election.      Oh, yeah- the AG position also went to the Democratic candidate.  More interestingly, proving how the GOP gerrymandered the districts, the Democratic party out-polled the GOP by more than 205,000, but only garnered 1 new assembly seat.  (The GOP retained 64 seats, the Dems only got 35).  It gets better.  The voters approved a change (increase) in the minimum wage, too.

So, what is the GOP doing right now?  Overruling the electorate and disallowing the approved change in the minimum wage law.  Overruling the electorate and disallowing the new Attorney General (AG) from withdrawing from the GOP challenge against PPACA (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare), despite his platform to do just that.  And, of course, the GOP is stripping the powers of the Executive branch, removing powers that have existed forever from the grasp of the newly elected Democratic Governor.  (The GOP also ensured that the Voter ID provisions can’t be altered by the newly elected Governor or AG.)

Evidence of Michigan Gerrymandering

And, then, there’s Michigan.  Here the GOP was even craftier.  A citizen led effort to raise the minimum wage and provide paid sick leave was created to put these critical needs on the ballot.  (The GOP actually challenged the initiative- but the Michigan Courts ruled the initiative certified for inclusion on the 2018 ballot.) So, the GOP passed their own versions of these provisions- rendering the ability and need for a plebiscite on paid sick leave and the increased minimum wage moot.  Doesn’t that just sound perfect?

Oh, wait.  Now that the election is over, the GOP is rescinding both of these changes.  Because it wasn’t a plebiscite (which would require 75% of the legislature to overturn the vote), the legislature can simply erase the provisions they invoked to preclude the plebiscite by a simple majority vote.

But, there’s more going in Michigan.  Like their brothers (there are few sisters that serve in the GOP seats) in North Carolina and Wisconsin, the lame duck GOP is stripping power from the governorship next year- because the seat went to the Democratic candidate.

Please don’t think this is only occurring in a few states.  It is part and parcel of most of the GOP positions across the US.  It is also why Wilbur Ross (and his boss TheDonald) are working feverishly to impose a citizenship question on the 2020 Census.  (Folks!  I already got my census form- with the citizenship section, and which I was required to submit immediately- before the Courts ruled on the validity of this question as part of the census.)

Using the Census for Voter Suppression 2020

The goal of this section is to suppress the census counts across the US in cities and suburban areas (where many legal AND illegal immigrants reside), handing even more power to the fewer residents of the rural portions of America, where the GOP still maintains a power base.  You can realize how suppressive this question is when you recognize that TheDonald promises to share all census data with law enforcement.

Yes.  By sharing the data that every resident of the US must supply to the Federal government (it is illegal to not complete the census) with the police (and ICE- Immigration and Customs Enforcement), the GOP can easily deport folks from this country.

Ah, the GOP concept of democracy brings tears to my eyes.
