I have spent many days in Taiwan. And, when I first began visiting, martial law was the norm. It really wasn’t until 1990 that a democratically elected President actually headed up the country’s government. (That’s despite the fact that Tricky Dick decided to recognize Beijing over Taiwan in 1979. It’s also why every time I needed a visa, I had to literally drive from Charlottesville to DC to visit the “Taiwan Interests Section”.)
And, now, after the election that was just held this past Sunday, the democratically elected President, Tsai Ing-Wen, is resigning as the party’s chair.
It’s not clear that Tsai’s loss wasn’t related to the dirty tricks that China effected on the Taiwanese electorate. Not much different than what the Russians attempt to do in the US – and across multiple European nations.
In this case, China believes they have the right to control Taiwan- just like they do Hong Kong. And, any lies they provide the residents will be akin to the lies provided Hong Kong before they took control. That there will be a democratic government and autonomy. NOT!
And, why am I writing about Taiwan?
Because this country, the USA, is no less immune to manipulation by despots than are the Taiwanese citizenry.
Consider this…
If a Mafioso(one who had already been convicted) were working out a plea deal with prosecutors had his attorney share the information that the prosecutor had with his pals that were un-indicted co-conspirators , would you not be clamoring for prosecution of those attorneys? And to eradicate any deal making for the convicted Mafioso. As we have done for at least decades. (There should be zero reason to explain the analogy at all!)
There are just too many folks willing to believe the chicanery that TheDonald spews. Our midterm elections had him scaring folks into believing that America was subject to an imminent invasion by folks from South America. Just so they’d vote for a GOP candidate?
And, then we have the folks who live in Mississippi. It seemed they were split between being absolute racists (plausible) or that they can overlook Cindy Hyde-Smith’s racist philosophy. After all, she went to a segregated school, sent her kids to segregated schools, makes fun of lynchings (which is something in which Mississippi has led all the other states- as opposed to education, where they totally lag the other states), who espouses Jefferson Davis as an honorable man who could represent Mississippi (and not admit him to be the traitorous wretch that he was), or that the Civil War really is the War of Northern Aggression.
Why are the Mississippians willing to believe so? Many of them claimed removing abortion as a choice for women who were raped or who can’t afford to raise children is worth it all. Like that overpowers having a racist, White Power adherent represent them in the Senate?
God help America. And Taiwan. And the Ukraine.
I’m genuinely amazed at the sheer volume of people in the States who take what they hear from Donald Trump as fact without question, without thought, and are happy to blindly follow him no matter what. It blows my mind. It really does.
You and me,both, Megan!

Mississippi. I lived for five years in Arkansas (a state that borders Mississippi) back in the1980’s, and nothing that happens in Mississippi surprises me. But some of the people I know who follow Trump here in the East – I can’t stop shaking my head.
It’s not just TheDonald. It’s the racist, misogynist beliefs that are exuded by certain folks, Alana.
Very good post. I’m experiencing some of these issues as well..
