Change.  We generally don’t like it.

Consider Twitter.  Right now, Jack Dorsey has rearranged (OK.  replaced) most of the executives in his firm.  Of course, Twitter is being blamed for not growing new users.  Even though it’s revenue is up- by 48%, I might add.

So, it’s reaching out to a wider audience.  And, since it’s a public company, every one gets to see – and complain- about it.

Just like when Facebook changed.  (OK.  As far as I can tell, that is a monthly occurrence.  It’s why my blog posts are no longer showing the right picture- and often times show absolute nothing on Facebook.)

Yahoo has been promising change for a while now.  But, it doesn’t seem to have accomplished much.

GM (General Motors) has certainly shown its changes.  It’s Cadillac division is no longer the dowdy matron of the upper crust.  And, it’s Chevy division is gaining wider sales.

And, if we don’t like the changes, we can find different venues.  (It’s why I no longer buy Chrysler vehicles.  Since they sold out to Mercedes Benz, who did it no favors whatsoever.  I’m not so sure Fiat is going to be the savior, either- but time will tell.)

And, my beloved coffee shop is changing.  Gone are the ethereal clouds of coffee aromas that adorned the window ceilings.  And, the coffee cup.  As well as broken coffee cup in a polyurethane matrix “fixings” bar.   Those cosmetic changes were tolerable.

The loss of the lending library is a bigger breach.  Because bring one/take one meant that the community was integral to the atmosphere of the shop.  Plus, it was great when you could pick up a book, peruse it, decide if it should be taken home, only to return it read, later.

Or, the art work that adorned the walls of the far room of the shop.  Now, that may return, only because the art work sold – which means revenue for the (new) owners.

But, the walls, heretofore adorned with fanciful artistry are now sterilely painted white.  (Can you imagine what they will be after a year of toddler hands swirling on those walls?)

Or, the far room to be tiled with faux brick.  Like this place is part of historic old town Alexandria, where the walls actually flash their real brick status.

Now, the fact that the sandwiches and food are supplied by its neighbor- also owned by the same folks- is less of an issue.  Because folks don’t really come to the shop to eat a lunch.  It’s more likely that the ‘hungries’ hit and you want something.

But, most of us didn’t come to the shop for the coffee, the bagel(s), the tea.  We came to interact with one another.  To be part of the Del Ray community.

That’s the change that has me looking for a new morning home.

But, I’m sticking with Twitter.

  1. For now, I am sticking with Twitter, too. Change can be traumatic. The CEO where I work is giving his annual “state of the company” speech today and I hope there are no negative changes being announced. I’ll know in about three hours.
