Sunday is…

Do you know what this Sunday is?   Oh, yes, it is, indeed, the 10th of March (2103) [28th day of Adar].  But, that’s not the point.  No, this Sunday is Good Deeds Day!

Good Deeds Day

You may recall (what, you don’t???) when I told you about this event last year.  Shari Arison (the daughter of the founders of Carnival Cruise line (which holdings includes Holland America, Seabourn, Princess, Costa, Aida, and Ibero cruise lines- plus an airline).  Yes, that one- the one that has had it’s share of interesting publicity in the past year or two.

But, this blog is NOT about the cruise line, but about this Sunday.  You, me, and everyone else you know should be doing something special that day.  A good deed.  To help others.  Part of the Jewish concept of Tikun Olam, to leave the world just a little better today than it was yesterday.

This will be the 7th year that Shari Arison has been trying to get us to join her in this quest.  Through her NGO (Ruach Tova) and the Ted Arison Family Foundation, she is trying to get us to do that one special good deed.  In 2007 (the first year), there were about 7000 volunteers; last year – a quarter million folks participated from some 50 countries.

So, we need to volunteer.  To pick an activity that will, indeed, improve something about our world.  You get to choose.  You can sign up on their site and let others know what your plans are (which may yield the fortune of having others join you in your efforts.)

Don’t know what to do?  Well, they have an app for that.  (OK, it’s a page– with links- to ideas.) And, that is in addition to the sign-up page, where you can what others have said they are doing- and you can join them there, too.  There’s even a toolkit (that’s what they call it- I call it a simple list) to help you get your project started and done- easily.

The goal is to get us to do this good deed today- and consider doing it more often.  But, this Sunday- that’s a great start for all of us.  Will you be joining us?

    1. Chef William…
I am so thrilled that you are going to participate. Given that you are in a part of the world where many of us aren’t, you can lead a whole new revolution in that region. Helping to make the whole world just a little bit better.
Thanks for passing along the message, as well!

  2. Hi Roy,
I was on a 45 minute train journey on Sunday, and spent the whole time listening, without much choice, to an Eastern European couple. They might have been having a row, or exchanging loving comments, I couldn’t tell, but it was pretty much non stop.
When we got the station, my good deed for the day was to help the man get his child’s pushchair off the train.
At least that was my intention, because as I bent down to pick up one end of the buggy, he shouted at me and waved me off.
She gave me a sheepish ‘thank you’ and I walked off feeling ‘good deedish!’
Cheers, always nice to remind us of the value of a good deed,

    1. First, I commend you for recognizing that we are all citizens of this world and we need to help one another.
Secondly, I commend you for recognizing that some folks just lack common sense.
Finally, I’m thrilled that at least one person in that family recognized the two facts above!
