We ARE in this together!

To most of you, it’s April Fools’ Day.  I never really got into that.  But, today is a special day for me.  It’s Opening Day at Citizen’s Bank Park.  My beloved Phillies have their first home game today. And, yes, as I will do umpteen times this year, I will drive from Virginia to Philly to root for my team.  (I will also root for my team every time they come to DC to whup the Nationals!).

Citizen's Bank Park

Why is this a subject for a blog?  Because just like we need to build team spirit among our staff- and our clients (we ARE all in this together), the Phillies are among the few teams that have a commonality. And, not only does the team have a communal spirit- the fans are part of it and the team loves the fans.

That is exactly what we want for our businesses.  We work with our clients- we are partners with them.  We are not like the larger firms that claim to have their clients’ interests at heart.  We get down in the trenches and work with our clients to solve the problems together.   And, when there’s success, we all feel the elation.

The larger firms may claim they have empathy for their clients’ problems and situations.  Empathy is important.  But, we embed ourselves in our clients.  When we serve as CRO or CFO or CEO for our clients, we ARE part of that team.  Our success is their success and vice-versa.

Let me share another secret with you.  I have NEVER lived in Philadelphia.  I chose the Phillies as my team.  And, to some degree, being the furthest commuter to the ballpark, they have chosen me (yes, they know who I am) as well.

And, the same applies for our clients.  We don’t take on every Tom, Dick, or Sally.  We need to make sure that we can make a difference in the organization and that our efforts are truly desired.  That’s the difference between the small and mid-sized advisory firm and the larger ones.  Our company chose its name on purpose.  We are an adjuvancy– an entity that enhances the behaviors and actions of ALL the components in the mixture.  I am sure you do the same with and for your clients, as well.

Let’s go Phils!

Let’s go clients!

We WILL succeed- together!Roy A. Ackerman, Ph.D., E.A.

  1. What a beautiful analogy, Roy! =) This post also has me thinking about commenting on other blogs. A blogger I really admire mentioned that she personally wouldn’t continue following blogs if they didn’t comment back because she felt that it showed a lack of respect. In the same way we don’t take on just any client, maybe I should also be prioritizing who I connect with in the blogging world. That is, maybe I should be focusing my efforts on people who are actually interested in connecting. =)

    1. There is value in conversation. When no one responds, it either means the other does not value input or is arrogant to others. The trick is to learn from everyone and ALWAYS have a great time. Learning is fun, achieving is great, and sharing is fantabulous.
      Thanks for all three!

  2. Roy, I know nothing about the Phillies but appreciate the comparison and the analogy. We must partner with our clients to create a team spirit and be loyal to them as you are to your team.

The beauty of it is that when we demonstrate that we truly care about out clients and customers and not just see them with dollar signs in our eyes, they become loyal to us as well. Great post!

    1. Thanks, Yvonne.
And, like some of our effort, the Phils managed to eke out a win in the bottom of the 9th. It ain’t over till someone gives up!

  3. I know nothing about the Phillies either, had to Google it!! But I love the way you connect your “love” with a valuable lesson. Nicely written and well put!

    1. That’s the trick. Learn from everything you see and do. There are connections everywhere.
Thanks for your comment, Hajra. I am humbled.
