Leadership <> Management

Leadership.  Management.   Don’t get confused- they are different and every enterprise needs both. And, rarely are they found in the same person at the same time.  It comes down to the raison d’etre for each organization.  Vision, Mission, and Goals. Leaders set the vision and develop the strategy for the team.  Vision is why the enterprise exists in the first place; strategy is how the enterprise plans to execute to achieve that vision, given the reality of the market, competition, regulation, and trends.   Managers  direct people to obey; leaders motivate people to achieve more than they thought possible.

I want you to read about baseball? Really?

No Gravatar

If you’ve been reading my blog, you know that I am a big “phan” of the Phillies.  And, nowadays, teams trade their people at the drop of the hat.  (To be honest, that is not a Phillies trait, but it does happen.)  Last year, Jayson Werth, our right fielder was a free agent and though he could get a big boost in pay.  He did- but now he’s a Washington National.  (I do see every Phillies game here in DC, where I live, as well as in Citizen’s Bank Park.  I may not root for the Nats, but I still follow Jayson.)

What’s My Company Worth?

No Gravatar

I have been participating in a discussion with other LinkedIn members about the valuation of new entities over the past week or so.  Clearly, there is no hard and fast rule to this process- and, that’s mostly because we have no hard and fast ability to determine who is going to succeed in the long term. It’s a little easier to evaluate a going business, as long as we don’t try to discern how much the future will impact the value of the company right now.

I had my post all picked out today.  (Actually,  I generally have four or five of them saved, ready to be posted on a given day).  But, today, I was moved by a blog I read.  And, I was compelled to tell you the story- so that Cary’s knowledge can help you, too.

Gimme that “old time religion”- and give it to everyone else, too!

No Gravatar

You’ve heard me (drone, rant, speechify) about the need for vision, mission, and goals for every enterprise and every individual.  And, I also believe in branding- but, that’s less important for small firms than delivering what is expected (or more) every time.  We- that’s you, me, and everyone else need to make our efforts into a religion, a belief, an “ISM”- Integrity, Simplify, and Magnify.

Firing on all cylinders

That’s an old expression- one that may go by the waysides, as my generation passes the torch.  It means one (or one entity) is operating at full capacity, at optimum speed.  It is a more vernacular expression for “The Adjuvancy”- an organization that optimizes the performance of all the entities in a mixture, ensuring maximum benefit to all participants.
