Japanese scientists have cloned stem cells to produce viable kidneys. Ok, in rats. But still! This is the sort of research that our country feels is in contravention to some religious morality. (Why not just let those folks NOT perform the research themselves. We have many others who want to help our sick citizens!)

Which is why some Wake Forest researchers are seeking ways to skirt the political bugaboos regarding stem cells – and still trying to increase the availability of kidneys for those in need.

While we were all sitting down to our Thanksgiving dinner, a pioneer passed away from the complications of an hemorrhagic stroke. Dr. Joseph E. Murray of Peter Bent Brigham (now Brigham and Women’s Hospital), who won the Nobel Prize in 1990 for developing the first living transplant, sharing the honor with Dr. E. Donnal Thomas, who pioneered bone marrow transplants (who died just one month earlier).
