I’ve been reading Barry Ritholtz’ column in the Washington Post for years. I find his financial discussions erudite- and clearly written. Which is how I try to communicate with you. But, his blog today (when this was written) was of a different focus. He stated what he has learned from writing his 30,000 blog posts. (He has me beat by some 28,500!) And, I agree with much of what he wrote, which I will share with you now (with my twist, of course)!

Starbucks?
What is it about Starbucks that makes people keep coming back? I don’t know about you- but I detest their coffee. It simply tastes burnt to me. (And, it’s not just me. My friends and clients also have the same feeling- even as they purchase gallons of their mixtures.)
What I learned from Chanuka- and a Wedding
I was honored to be invited to a wedding of two friends- Rick and Maraji. These two wonderful people decided to have the ceremony in their home on Rosh Chodesh (the new moon) of Chanuka. (Oh, it was also on a Tuesday- the day of creation when Hashem said it was a good day- twice!) The wedding was wonderful- their words to each other- and us- clearly evoked my emotions. And, the toast- by their daughter- custom made lyrics sung a capella… You just had to be there. Continue reading What I learned from Chanuka- and a Wedding
Im Tirtzu
Ah, the use of a quote out of context…
Chaim Herzl wrote (he did not speak a word of Hebrew)…

MOOC mucking…
So, it’s time to see if this experiment is working. Which experiment? MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). I explained how these work (or at least the Harvard/MIT/UC Berkeley version, called edX) and explained that MIT also has had open courseware for more than a decade.
Manager Material?
Most of you know I went to a small engineering school for my undergraduate degree. The goal of Brooklyn Poly was to graduate the best practical engineers anyone could find- anywhere. And, by and large, they did that job superbly. (Of course, some of those who didn’t finish the programs may not feel this to be the case, but, then again, they didn’t finish…)
Make it autonomous
So, I haven’t decided if this is about multi-tasking (time-slicing) or practicing… Because, if we don’t hone our abilities to perform functions to perfection, then our ability to do multiple things nearly simultaneously fails miserably.
Luck, Skill, and knowing the difference!
Adversity as educator?
Roy A. Ackerman, PhD, EA
Here we go, another nature vs. nurture argument. Why do we succeed? Most folks (lets keep the politicians out of this discussion and limit our considerations to facts) think this is related to our abilities, our cognitive skills. In other words, our ability to detect patterns, to perform analyses (calculations and logic), and to recognize letters and words. And, that we should practice these skills often and early. (It should be clear that we are talking about the intelligence that is manifested on IQ tests).
