No, this post has nothing to do with Tina Fey’s new movie. I even considered using a term I learned when I was about 7. the headline on the (then ultraliberal, now ridiculously conservative) New York Post that read ‘SNAFU’. And, when I confronted my dad to define the term for me, there was a great deal of hemming and hawing, until he came up with ‘Situation Normal, All Fouled Up’. (By now, i am sure you’ve discerned the true definition of the term.)

To insure that only those that had the right to be in our R&D facilities, we used electronic keys- 30+ years ago.  Moreover, the codes changed, based upon the hour of the day.  That way those who should not have been in the lab after hours couldn’t be.  That was one way we kept our technology to ourselves.  Of course, back then there were no USB keys that you could plug into a computer and walk away with secrets.  But, you could make a floppy.  Somehow, we managed to keep our data smaller back then, too- so a lot could disappear on that floppy (or two or three).

Electronic Security- no, a different kind

Times have changed.  It used to be that our company had two keys to the post office box.  One was held by Harry Thornton (A’H), who picked up our mail each day (and cleaned up our offices and did odd jobs) and the other sat in my locked desk drawer.  The keys to my desk drawer were on my key ring and in the safe.   Simple.

Big Brother Owns Your Phone!

I wrote a few weeks ago about some new devices the police are acquiring to enable facial recognition.  I said, we can expect such devices to find widespread use- way beyond their original intent.  (You do know the GPS on your phone not only tells you where you are, but everyone else, as well?)
