Today is a most special day. 70 years ago (the Hebrew date, which is the 5th of Iyar, is the one that counts), the State of Israel was created. A dream that had been unfulfilled for almost 2000 years.

Who’s the Fairest of Them All?

My father rarely, if ever, food-shopped.  But, when it was summer time, he would venture into that foreign country (the supermarket) and choose cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, and a few other tasty treats.   Up until his garden (one which took hours of his time every day off) and actually consisted of about 10% of home acreage.  (Given the fact that the home employed 30 to 50% [two different homes], this constituted a great portion of what used to be green lawn.  (Yes, we had the greenest lawns in the neighborhood, too.)

R&D cuts mean fewer Start-ups

I am not trying to sound the Doomsday Machine.  Our economy is picking up.  Corporations are raising their low-end employee’s wages.  (Don’t get too excited.  They are not doing this for benevolent reasons.  They are having a tough time keeping their low-end employees, because jobs are now more available.)  But, we still are not coming out with a plethora of new products.

Still?

I have always been a fan of Will and Ariel Durant.   I read what was then the 9 volume set before I graduated from junior high.  (I finished the other two, newer, tomes comprising their entire History of Civilization when they were published in 1975.)   These eminently readable books helped me learn history- more than I learned in school or from other books.
