It’s important. REALLY!

I have lived in the Commonwealth of Virginia for some 40 years now.  And, over the past decade, the educational budget has been cut and cut and cut.  Oh, it’s not just the Commonwealth.  Michigan, California, New York… I could go on. Overall, our 50 states have averaged a 23% drop in funding from the Great Recession through 2013- and the precipitous drop is only accelerating.  It used to be that these states all provided outstanding college education and experiences to the students of their states.  But, not anymore.

Alma Mater Matters

What’s the value of a specific school education?  I’ve talked about the elite (public) New York City high schools .  But, many of the kids who go to those schools are not much different from the kids who went to Brooklyn Poly with me.  They (and I) arose from the lower middle class; nowadays, this means they probably may lack a home computer or a home internet connection, both of which are the benefits that accrue when one is from the middle or upper classes.   And, that doesn’t even include the ability to go to the college of their choice- where the price of tuition may be just one reach too far.

So, now we’ll screw up the colleges, too?

Most of you know that I have taught at various colleges and universities.  As such, I have taught a range of students.  As a matter of fact, one year, I filled in for a colleague, teaching a remedial math (I actually considered it arithmetic) class. It took a while, but I finally figured out how to get the kids psyched to learn the material…

Balagan!

This was supposed to be a great weekend.  My son was getting a chance to bask in the rewards of those great experiences during his tenure at Michigan, which were made possible by his exploits at high school.  But, my weekend was marred by revelations I received.   And, the situation that ruined this weekend is not out of the ordinary- I believe this process obtains throughout most of this country.  It is an absolute disaster.  It must be stopped!

Not my normal post…

This is not something I normally do.   No, this is something that my friend, Janette Fuller does.   She reviews books you- or your children- should read.  But, I am going to recommend a book for you today.  One written by the child (Sorry, Ilana, you are younger than mine- so you will forever be a child) of my good friends.  A woman (see, I can change) that I have known for most of her life.

Education- or Job Training?

With college tuition skyrocketing, it’s not surprising that kids are graduating from college owing a fortune.  And, many of these loans were guaranteed by their parents- which is one of the reason why so many folks in their late 50s and early 60s are saddled with unpaid college debt.

Home-School Loophole

Many of you know that I reside in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  (An addition this morning:  Congratulations to Tim Kaine, who ran a stellar race and will be a stellar Senator.  And, kudos to President Obama and his myriad volunteers and staffers who worked the highways and byways of Virginia for their solid win yesterday.)   My relocation to this state occurred just as “Massive Resistance” was coming to a close.   Massive Resistance, under the tutelage of Senator Harry Byrd of Virginia, was the program by which (bigoted) residents avoided integrating their children in public schools (as a result of the Brown v. The Board of Education Supreme Court decision of 1954), allowing the closing of public schools, rather than allow integration.
