I have always been shocked and amazed at how things existed in Virginia. From the moment I first became a resident of the Commonwealth in 1976.

Lincoln, Lincoln, I’ve been thinkin’…what the heck have you been drinkin’?
Flint. Newark. DC. Boston. Jersey City. Baltimore. And, probably every other major city in the US.

About time!
I’m sure you’ve heard that a near miracle has occurred. No, not the miracle of Chanuka that let the menora stay lit for eight days. I’m talking about the transportation bill that finally passed both houses of Congress- and actually funds the program for more than a few weeks. Yes, indeed, we have a FIVE year transportation bill.
I knew it!
Most of you know that I live in metropolitan DC. Which means that bsides all the cameras the Feds have installed to spy on us, we have a plethora of traffic cameras.
An important anniversary
Do you know what yesterday was? It was the 200th anniversary of the penning of our national anthem. Yup. Around 9 AM on morning of the 14th of September 1814, just when the sun was coming up, Francis Scott Key saw the raising of the 15 stars and stripes up the Fort McHenry (Baltimore, MD) flagpole.

Gun Violence as an Epidemic?
I’ve written before how Jared Cohen of Google Ideas has been trying to discern how to stop terrorism. By determining the similarity how gangs recruit and initiate members to those methods employed by terrorists. And, given those similarities, how to stop folks from belonging to either. That’s a great idea to me.
Children’s Asthma- Redux
Remember when I wrote about how Children’s Hospital in Boston was dealing with the asthma problem? (What? You don’t? Shame on you. Here is the link ☺ ) As I said then, that’s the sort of practice that needs to be everywhere to manage our overall healthcare costs. And, now, Children’s National Medical Center (DC) is employing a similar practice. Which is a very good thing- since DC has among the highest rates of pediatric asthma in the US. And, one where the area emergency rooms (ER) are the modality of choice far too frequently (in my humble – or not– opinion).
