Water. Agriculture. Aquaculture. Antibiotic Resistance (3)
So, now we’re ready. We already know that we are buying and eating the delectable offerings of Chinese shrimp and catfish. Even if they try to claim they are Malaysian or even American.( What? You haven’t read Monday’s or Tuesday’s post? )

R&D cuts mean fewer Start-ups
I am not trying to sound the Doomsday Machine. Our economy is picking up. Corporations are raising their low-end employee’s wages. (Don’t get too excited. They are not doing this for benevolent reasons. They are having a tough time keeping their low-end employees, because jobs are now more available.) But, we still are not coming out with a plethora of new products.
This is not something we want to have grow!
We know that water shortages are not just looming- they are here. (Check out this blog post.) But, we are not only running out of water, desertification is occurring – around the world.

Yo, Ho, Ho and a Bottle of Rum!
When I moved to Charlottesville (VA), I found out that I was wrong about a whole bunch of things. No, not about Southern mentality, as it radically differs from that of Northerners. (But, I’m not making light of that at all!) Instead, it was that I found out that Thomas Jefferson was not dead- instead, he was alive and still the mayor of the place!
All the news that’s fit to print?
Things have been changing. The Ann Arbor News is no longer a daily- but exists on the web. Newsweek has basically disappeared (but would probably still be on the newsstands- at least today- had Sid Harman not met his demise.) The Washington Post makes a profit- because it owns for-profit schools. Everywhere we turn, we hear that our news delivery is changing.
Whither R&D
OK. This is rant time. Corporate profits are doing fine- even if we (the consumer, the population) are not. A lot of this profit is due to the fact that workers are not being paid well, or that there are not enough workers (i.e., corporations are “running lean”, often meaning there are too few workers for the tasks at hand).
Soon, not a drop to drink…
I’ve discussed on several occasions that the world’s next wars will be over water. Not only because we are running short of potable water, but because we are running short of water for almost all purposes. It doesn’t help matters that there is no international treaty that governs actions when waterways cross national boundaries. Typically, it means that downstream nations get the short straw.
Whither Manufacturing? Wither?
We’ve already discussed why employment is in trouble in the US. But, there are other facts- forgetting the politics- that really tell the story. Many are angry that the US bailed out the banks. Given how the banks have acted since that effort, one would be hard pressed to not feel that same way. But, many are annoyed that the US bailed out the auto industry. Given how that effort has turned out, one is hard pressed to understand those thoughts.
