Sometimes you just have to share bad information. Like a few weeks ago, when I reported that data indicated the nature of the microbiome population in a mom’s gut is associated with the development of autism spectrum disorders in their children. (My goal in publicizing this data was to alert parents-to-be of the issue- and to consider fecal transplantation if that issue could be applied to them.)

Woohoooooooo!
So today is a holiday with which I was never allowed to participate. Oh, sure, we bought candy for all the little tykes that would bang on our door, but I wasn’t permitted to travel the streets. It wasn’t our holiday.
I need to suck your blood….
OK. Today is the day for the WayBack Machine. And, that will be true for a whole bunch of reasons.
2nd Best Ain’t Good Enough
From the second the first dialyzer was invented by Abel, Rowntree, and Turner 115 years ago, it should have been clear that dialysis- which cleans the blood of most of the toxins that accumulate when the subject has kidney failure, was, at best, incomplete.
And,the wind, it cries Mary…
As a child of the 50s and 60s, I was surrounded by folks who experimented with all sorts of “mind-enhancing” drugs. Me? I was content to keep my experiments contained within my chem lab. (Nowadays, my fraternity brothers and friends would term me the “designated driver”.)
Creative Accounting or Illegal Practice?
I am sure you are all wondering what’s been happening about the dialysis patient organizations- and, now, it seems that some dialysis clinics- are paying the health insurance premiums for dialysis patients. (I first discussed this issue here). There is a new complainant- it’s not just private insurance companies now.
Not government pork?
I had to call in a lifeline today (when this was written). Because I was reading an article that was ticking me off; it made no sense to me.
Blocked. So, they parry.
The hoops we make researchers go through to find ways to solve human problems- the ones that politicians (and religious kooks) impose to block valid modalities to improve our lives.
Stick it to me?
Can you imagine what your life would be if your kidneys failed? You would probably be forced to give up your job (see below for more) and spend 3 days a week going back and forth to a dialysis clinic, where you would be hooked up to a machine for about 4 hours each time. And, you still would only have some of your kidney functions fixed, not all of them.
How come this only works for drugs?
For years, various patient advocate groups have been helping folks get health insurance. In particular, the AKF (American Kidney Fund) has been paying the premiums for folks who are undergoing dialysis.
