Tonight begins the 9th day of Av, which continue until tomorrow. (Remember that the Tora said, “There was evening, there was morning, one day”. That is why our days begin in the evening- and why there’s a Christmas Eve and a New Year’s Eve.) The very end of this Hebrew month denotes the day my mother died and the next day (also a new moon) is the day my oldest daughter was born. All auspicious moments.

So, most of you know that I have survived a fatal illness. Yes, I’m lucky- but I knew that when I survived car crashes, airplane crashes, bombings, gun shootings… OK, you get the idea.

Dr. Pieter Cohen (Harvard Medical) has been on his academic and research soapbox almost as long as I. And, he, along with John Travis (NSF International), Celine Vanhee (Sciensano Research Institute, Belgium’s version of NIH), as well as Dana Ohana and Bastiaan Venhuis (National Institute of Public Health and the Environment, Netherland’s version of NIH), just published the results of their research in Clinical Toxicology.
