Valentine’s Day?   That’s what everyone says it is.  (It’s also the 19th day of Sh’vat.)

Except, in my tradition, this was a holiday celebrated by others.  Given the official name for the day as “Saint Valentine’s Day”, it should surprise no one that it was not part of my routine growing up. A child going to yeshiva (a Jewish [very] religious school) is not to be considering any day involving saints as pertaining to them.  (That’s true, regardless of Hallmark’s yeoman efforts to make us all forget that first word of the celebration.)

Genetics. Microbiome. Guess which trumps?

You already know that I am not a fan of this genetic testing craze.

Sure, folks are desperate to know where they came from.  (And, it’s clear they don’t trust their grandparents to share!)  Or, they are worried they may have some disease.  (Like knowing what you have without a treatment is going to make you feel much better.)  Some firms even promise to screen your embryo for diseases.

A new look at Advanced Medical Directives?

No Gravatar

I have written about living wills (aka Medical Directives) for a long time.  (Here’s but one .) And, I warned many of you who had the (same, incorrect) impression that I did how many states and localities are making the decision that we are dead- and then extract organs for donation.
