Running a business? Then, you know that money you spend for meals – or entertainment- that are business related are not fully deductible. Oh, sure, if you spend $ 100 wining and dining a client, your profits have been reduced by $ 100. Except that’s not how it appears on your Schedule C or Form 1120 or Form 1065. Because only 1/2 of that expense is deductible.

Janney’s Lane? No, the Post Office says its Janneys Lane.

So, every time I move to a new town, I learn its history.  I did that when I moved to Cambridge and Boston, again in Ann Arbor, Long Beach (CA), Charlottesville, and Alexandria.  And, that usually meant that my kids were subjected to those searches and adventures, too.

I’m sure you’ve recognized by now that many of our most creative individuals never get the credit they deserve. Sometimes, it’s because what they developed or invented was marketed by a large firm, so the credit goes to the company. Sometimes, it’s because the inventor or developer is a typical engineer, who prefers to be left alone. There are a slew of other reasons, besides.

If our Pols weren’t liars, this would be bipartisan.

Let’s consider a few claims made by both parties.

They believe in Capitalism, but not Crony Capitalism.  Except they we protect firms with special rules to preclude their failure. They encourage these firms  to line their pockets (oh, wait- they call them political contributions) so they write special tax provisions to give them unfair advantages.

Sleepless in Seattle?

I’ve reported before on studies that showed the change in minimum wage has little affect on employment. But, a new study appeared this week, using the data from Seattle, which just recently raised it’s minimum wage from $ 9.47 to $11, and then subsequently to $ 13 an hour.

CCXLVI. Oh, and XXVI, 2!

Ah, facts.  Long before our current president, we weren’t always meticulous about dates and facts.   After all, we did decide to use 4 July 1776  as the date we proclaimed our independence from Britain.  Even if the Declaration of Independence was issued two or three days earlier.  And, that means we celebrate our Freedom 241 years later today.  (Thankfully, it is not among those days that Congress, in its infinite wisdom [read as stupidity], elected to move to Mondays, affording a longer weekend. )  We celebrate the day with fireworks, with going to the beach, with barbeques, and with get-togethers.
